Introduction

I've always been more DC than Marvel, but I have a confession to make - the Flash has never been on the top of my list. Even the modern television show, while enjoyable, wasn't enough to turn me into a true fan of the character.

But when Mezco announced a One:12 Collective version of the speedster, I knew I'd be picking one up.  They also produced a Previews Exclusive version of his archenemy, Zoom. As a Reverse Flash, it was a pretty easy exclusive to put together, and with the similarities, I figured it made sense to cover both at the same time.

These just started shipping in the last couple weeks, and will run you around $70 - $80 depending on the retailer.

Packaging - ***1/2
The sturdy, thick boxes are completely collector friendly, and keep the figure and accessories safe in their plastic trays. The exterior design is pretty basic, but the 'reverse' theme between the pair looks great. Of course, the Zoom box also has the PX exclusive label.

Sculpting - ***1/2
There are actually three portraits between the two figures: two for Flash, one for Zoom. That's not all the sculpting I'm counting here either, as the emblems are a critical aspect to the costume.

The standard Flash portrait is stoic and determined, with the wings at the ears on either side. The detailing is excellent, with the mask edge sharply defined and crisp. This is a serious, bad ass Flash.

The second portrait is smiling, friendly, fun times Flash. This isn't the wide grin we saw in the original marketing photos, but a closed mouth smile, and it works well. This version also has the white eyes on the mask, rather than the normal eyes with the standard portrait.

The Flash emblem is a sculpted hard plastic piece attached to the front of the costume. It's a very good sculpt, with tiny, tiny ends on the lightning bolt. It's attached straight and clean, and looks terrific.

Zoom only gets one portrait, and he's clearly pissed off about it. Like the standard Flash portrait, Zoom has a finely detailed sculpt around the eyes, lips, and nose. Everything is sharp and crisp, and I love the heavily squinted eyes. Someone with no idea of who these two characters are could easily pick out the good guy and the villain, thanks to the sculpted expressions.

He's wearing the same logo, only in reverse. The tiny tips on the bolt are very sharp, so I'd take a little care handling it.

These two figures are mirror versions of each other, so it's no surprise both are just shy of 6 1/2".

Paint - Zoom ***; Flash ***1/2
One of the hallmarks of this tiny line is the excellent paint work.  The Flash shows that off perfectly in the face and mask, with clean, sharp lines and edges.  The skin tone is great, and the eyes are just about perfect.  Even the white eyes on the smiling portrait are consistent. There's a little blip here or there - the white and yellow emblem could be a smidge cleaner - but the nits are minor.

Zoom isn't quite as clean, particularly on the edges of the mask.  There's a little more slop on the face, although once again it's pretty minor. Mezco has set the bar mighty high with past releases, and Zoom isn't quite at the top of their game.

Articulation - ***1/2
The underlying body works great, with plenty of mobility in all the joints. The beauty of a simple costume is the lack of restriction, and there's nothing here with either costume that gets in the way of the posability.

The ball jointed neck is particularly good, and will allow you to pose them in various running stances and still keep the chin up. The rocker ankles work well, and posing the feet flat on the ground is quite easy.

My only nit is with the wrists.  I had a tough time getting them to rotate, so that the hands could bend in or out in different poses. I'm not sure if the gauntlets are just getting in the way, or if the posts were simply too tight in the wrist, but it was a tad annoying.

Accessories - Zoom ***; Flash ****
The two figures are almost identical in this category, but the Flash gets that second portrait. And you know I love second portraits.

Along with the two heads, he has three sets of swappable hands. There's the fists he comes wearing, plus a pair of clutching hands and a pair of flat hands. These swap pretty easily, and I had no fear of damage or breakage.

There are also two 'speed' effects for his legs, and two for his arms. These can be wrapped around the appendages in a couple different ways, depending on the pose. They worked quite a bit better than I expected, and I could see using them with certain running poses.

There's technically one more hand - a swirling tornado punch that you can attach to either wrist post. The translucent red swirl of plastic looks great, and the joints are tight enough to allow him to hold it up in most poses.

Finally, the Flash comes with his round display base. There's the clear plastic support, or you can use the foot peg.

Zoom has exactly the same set of accessories, minus the second portrait. The only difference is the reverse coloring.

Outfit - ***1/2
The two costumes are identical, other than color of course. These are simple uniforms, but Mezco has nailed them.

The body suit is well tailored, although I'm sure some people will complain about the crotch being saggy in deeper stances. You should be able to work with it to get the look you want, including adjusting the seam on the legs and arms. The boots and gloves are sculpted of course, but fit tightly over the suit.

I've already mentioned the emblems, both fit to the chest perfectly straight and even.  The belt kinda floats on the hips - it's tacked to the suit in the back, but not at the sides, so you don't have to worry about damaging it or the suit when posing him.

Fun Factor - ***1/2
Great posability, great accessories, terrific characters - this pair is all kinds of fun.  While some folks may pass on Zoom, getting an arch enemy like this right out of the gate makes for a way better display.

Value - Zoom **; Flash **1/2
I'm fairly comfortable with the $70 - $75 range that we're seeing for most of the standard characters. The Flash falls in this range, has two portraits and a bunch of accessories, making him an average value.

Unfortunately, Zoom is at $80. That's the 'exclusive' nature of the figure making itself heard.  But because he lacks the second portrait and all the other accessories are simply re-used, I have a hard time justifying the price point.

Things to Watch Out For -
Take a little care with the emblems. Those small bolt tips are sharp and tiny, and you don't want to damage them - or your finger. Otherwise, you should be pretty much good to go.

Overall - Zoom ***; Flash ***1/2
While I might not be a huge Flash fan, I have to admit that this is a great rendition. You know that Mezco is going to do their own thing when it comes to these 'comic' themed designs, and some of those designs have not been a hit with every fan.  I have a hunch that this won't be the case with Flash, who I suspect will be popular with almost every fan of the speedster.

Zoom is a tougher sell of course. At $80, with fewer accessories, I'm not surprised that he's still available at various retailers. But for those fans that pick up both, I think they'll be very happy with the decision long term.

If you haven't ordered the Flash, you might be out of luck, at least with your usual retailers.  He's selling out everywhere, and the One:12 Collective is becoming a line that you REALLY need to pre-order to ensure you'll get the figures you want.
