Introduction
Quantum Mechanix has been producing a terrific line of small statues/figures for the last several years called Q-Figs. These highly detailed, stylized characters have covered a TON of licenses, everything from Aliens to Harry Potter to DC to Freddy Krueger and everything in between. One of the larger sets is Marvel of course, and tonight I'm checking out three new releases.
There is Cyclops, in his X-Men gear; Venom, doing his wall crawling best; and Deadpool, who is breaking the fourth wall quite literally, stepping
off the pages of his own comic. These are currently available at retailers for around $20 each.
Packaging - ***
The window boxes show off the figure, and they are held safe inside a collector friendly plastic tray. It's a simple design, but it works quite
well. The boxes are similar in size to the Funko Pops.
Sculpting - ***1/2
These are always in the 4 - 5" range. The figures themselves are around 4", and depending on the design of the base, they can be a bit bigger. For
example, Cyclops and Venom, standing on their larger bases, are in the 4 1/2" range, while Deadpool is closer to 4".
I think of the style as sort of Muppet Babies meets Superheroes, although I may be the only one. They represent the characters in a youthful, child-like way, both in terms of proportions and style. It's super cute of course, and the consistent design makes for a terrific looking set on the shelf.
Cyclops has just blasted his ray, with some flaming residue rising from his visor. He's standing on an elevated, tilted X, a base design they've used for other X-Men in this same era/costume, like Wolverine. It's a dynamic look that also creates a seamless team appearance.
Venom is crawling up a wall, flicking out that tongue of his, with large, nasty looking chompers. The tongue has a slime or drool coming off of it, creating a cute yet disgusting aura. That's not an easy effect to achieve!
Deadpool is my favorite of the three, but he's also my favorite character of these three, so I'm betting there's some bias involved. The box actually refers to him as '4D', and the figure is sculpted with one foot still stuck inside the pages of his own comic. The comic is folded over, so the earlier pages are visible on the backside, and Deadpool is telling you to be quiet, all while drawing one of his katana's from the scabbard on his back. It's a terrific design, and I love the way the comic ripples around his left foot as he is pulling it free.
Paint - ***
One of the features of the Q-Figs are the bright, vibrant pallets. Even characters like Venom get a splash of color.
It's not a perfect paint job though, with a few blips here and there on all three. Cyclops shows some rough edges around the face and mask, while the black lips and white teeth of Venom exhibit some similar issues. Of the three, Deadpool has the best work, but there's still some bleed between the black and red of his costume.
These aren't major issues though, and considering the price point, the quality of the paint work is pretty much in line. One thing that did bum me out a tad - the red effect rising off Cyclops visor was shown as translucent plastic in the marketing photos, but they settled on a painted red instead.
Articulation - N/A
This is an FYI category only. I wanted to reiterate that these are statues, with no articulation of any kind.
Value - ***
At $20 each, you're getting a pretty good deal based on quality, scale, and the current market. I've seen some retailers put them on sale as well,
and you can occasionally save a few bucks that way.
Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing. These 'statues' are a PVC style, solid and pretty much unbreakable. There's nothing to assemble, and nothing to damage.
Overall - ***1/2
While the overall paint work could be a smidge better on these, they are a solid value, and the designs are terrific. This is a series where having
one or two isn't particularly exciting, but having a large number of diverse characters all in the same general style is a huge draw. The detailing
and cuteness are just icing on the cake!
