Introduction

Mezco continues to defy the general consensus that only licensed action figures sell with their terrific Rumble Society. While many of the characters are themed around Gomez, their mascot, they have also produced some truly interesting original characters. The latest to fit that description is Atticus Doom.

As with many of their original characters, Atticus comes with a comic book that fills in some details. I think their description on the first page says it all - "Supreme Sorcerer, filled with Eldritch powers, a disciple of the unknown, tethered to the necroverse by his left hand. His power is immense, his knowledge is vast, and his agendas are questionable".

I'm a huge fan of the old pulp style heroes and villains, and characters like Atticus Doom are loving homages to the action stories of that period. You know I'm all in.

Atticus was available originally through the Mezco online store, where he was $95. Like most of the Rumble Society, he sold out quickly, and ebay is really your best bet now.

Packaging - ****
While I really like the tin packages, these heavy cardboard boxes are also works of art. They look terrific, are very sturdy, and have a 'hidden treasure' feel to them. It's all collector friendly of course, and there's a consistency between the releases.

My only complaint is with the comic book, which comes shipped separately. They put it in an outer shipping box that wasn't quite big enough and caused some creasing.

Sculpting - ****
As with most One:12 figures, Atticus comes with two portraits. There's a skull head, wrapped in a turban, that is his main look. There's a flaming symbol on his forehead, and if you remove the turban you'll find his exposed brain! Buried in the very center of his brain matter is a Philosopher's Oculus, a stone that gives the possessor access to arcane knowledge and magic. That's the sort of nifty back story and attention to detail that makes figures like this so cool.

The skull face has a rough bone-like texture and deep set eyes. Those eye sockets come in handy with one of the accessories - more on that in a minute.

The second portrait is a Cthulu inspired countenance. The background story provides some info, and there's definitely a Lovecraft inspiration. This head has that octopus look, or perhaps a kraken design - there's a lot of ways you can look at it. Lots of slimy skin detail, with veins and folds galore.

There's also some very unique hand sculpts, including a crab claw, a couple tentacles, and 'medusa fingers' hand. The sculpts are all excellent - more details in the Accessories section.

He's a little shorter than the Marvel or DC figures, coming in at about 6 1/4" tall.

Paint - ***1/2
Because the one head is largely green reptile-like skin, and the other is largely bone white, there's not a ton of paint detail.

The Cthulu head has very clean eyes though, and there's a dark shading around them. Some of the hands - like the Medusa Hand - have a translucent color, catching the light in interesting ways.

The skull head has a very realistic look to the exposed brain, and the bone colored, pock marked, scarred skull face has a wash to bring out these details. The dark eyes and 'mouth' look terrific, and while there's not a ton of paint detail overall, what's here is done well.

Articulation - ***1/2
The base body works well, although I'm sure some folks will wish they had the double jointed elbows.

The ball neck is a bit restricted by the scarf, and even more so by the face tentacles on the Cthulu head. The rotating hinge elbows, shoulders, and wrists can take normal, natural arm poses, but they are a bit restricted by the coat, and you can't get too crazy with them.

The torso has a little turn, crunch, and lean, but the layers of clothing restrict it slightly. The hips, knees, and ankles work great, and you should have no trouble creating short to medium stances and keep both feet flat on the ground.

A big plus is the wire in the coat and belt. It will allow you to create some dynamic movement in the outer layer, and match the flow of the coat to the rest of the pose. One of the tentacle hands - the long, straight one - is bendy as well, although getting too much bend in it was difficult.

Accessories - ****
While we've seen a ton of these extras before, they've used them to their fullest advantage here, and added in a few really cool new items.

I've already mentioned the two heads, and that's always a big plus for me. I've recently been putting out all my One:12 figures in the CIOPCC, and I've found there's more with just one head than I realized. It makes it all the better when we get these extra portraits.

There's also a variety of hands. There are two additional rights, with the eye on the back of the glove, and three extra lefts. One of these lefts is done in a fiery translucent color, perfect to go with the magic effects. These hands swap easily, and I had no fear of breakage.

There's also a set of unique hands. There's a claw - the Nebulous Claw - as well as a long and short tentacle. Perhaps most interesting is the Medusa Hand, a left hand made up of long fingers tipped with snake heads.

He also has some magic effects. If you have Dr. Fate, you've seen a similar set up. These translucent effects can be attached to the arms with a clear plastic cuff arrangement, or you can use the extra base pieces (including a second smaller base itself) to set them up in a line, as though he is blasting the magic a physical distance.

In fact, one of these magic effects has a wrist peg (and small cloth sleeve) so you can attach any one of the hands to it. It's a pretty good design, although you may not like the plastic cuffs.

There's a couple other effects as well. One of them is a smoke-like circle that goes around his neck. I wasn't a huge fan of the look, but your mileage may vary. I liked the other effect much more - flaming eyeballs! These pop into the eye sockets, and make it appear as though there's a burning fire inside.

The final effect is a flaming hand attachment that can wrap around one of the regular left hands. All in all, it's an excellent assortment, and the number of different combinations is really impressive.

But wait, there's more! He also comes with a really cool cane, which is really more of a shillelagh, topped with a goblin skull, and the Tamra Zaraza, a book of magic. The carved cover carries over the Cthulu theme, and every page inside (yes, it opens!) is printed. Again, if you have Dr. Fate, this tome is much like the one that came with him in quality.

Of course, there's the base, with the foot peg or the large clear plastic support rod. As I mentioned, there's some additional clear plastic pieces to use in various combinations with the magic effects.

Finally, there's the comic book, which ships separately from the packaged figure and accessories.

Outfit - ****
While the outfit isn't super complex, they did an amazing job with the tailoring of the multiple layers.

The outer coat includes the wired edge as well as the wired belt, and both come in handy. The underlying shirt and vest look great, especially with the brass colored closures on the front of the vest. The bright scarf is a dash of color, while the jeans and boots add an adventurous feel.

The quality of the stitching, materials, and tailoring is excellent all around, and it's an impressive costume, especially at this scale.

Fun Factor - ****
This guy is a ton of fun on his own, but add in characters like Captain Nemo and Doc Nocturnal, and you'll have the start of an amazing display.

Value - **1/2
With most One:12 figures, a $95 price tag would drop another star off this score, hitting just slightly below average. But thanks to the tremendous number and assortment of accessories, he managed to get an average score here even at the higher price.

Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing. Everything is sturdy and well made, and I had no worries about breakage or damage while I was working with the figure and accessories.

Overall - ****
I'm absolutely a sucker for characters like this. It's a great design, an obvious call back to the pulp stories from the 30's (much like Indiana Jones), and it even taps into Lovecraftian themes.

Of course, it also helps that there's a ton of excellent accessories, and great quality all around. I really can't ask for much more, and I'm all up for any more figures done in this style.

Where to Buy
As with all the Rumble Society characters, Atticus was a Mezco Direct exclusive, where he was $95. Now your best bet is to search ebay for a deal.
