Introduction
While the 2019 remake of Hellboy wasn't a huge success, either financially or critically, fans of the character did get the excellent One:12 Collective figure based on the new look. Mezco followed that up with a PX (Previews) exclusive version called the Anung un Rama edition. This variant includes the long longs and flaming effects, a perfect edition to your Hellboy display.
As a Previews exclusive, it was only available through comic shop retailers, not the Mezco store itself. Think of it as a reverse exclusive. Most stores were selling it in the $100 range, up slightly from the usual $80. This is a pretty late review though - this guy sold out at regular retail quite awhile ago. There are some reasonably good deals on ebay right now, however.
Packaging - ****
Like most of the PX exclusives, he comes in a large, metal box. I
love these things - even when you open him up and display him,
you'll have a great container for other goodies on the shelf.
The tin is thick, the litho paint work is high quality, and the
hinged lid works great. Inside is a couple layers of plastic trays,
each holding the figure and accessories in a collector friendly way.
Sculpting - ****
As usual, you get two portraits. The regular head is the same one we
got earlier, with a stern expression and piercing eyes. The
skin texture looks great, and the tied back hair has nice stranding
and detail. If you didn't get the first release, having this
portrait is important.
Of course, it's really the second portrait that most have come to the party for. The horns are intact, long and majestic. The expression is pissed, with a slight snarl that isn't too extreme and silly. I wasn't a big fan of the snarling expression we got with the first figure, but this one is a huge improvement. It also lacks the man bun in back, making it even more unique.
To increase the usefulness of these portraits even more, the horns are removable. If you'd like to use this snarling look but don't want to have the horns, pop them off and put the cut off versions in their place! This really increases the flexibility and variety of his potential expressions.
He stands about 6 1/2" tall in the regular head, but the horns take him up to almost 8".
Paint - ****
It might just be my imagination, but the paint work looks a smidge
better this time to me. The earlier version had a bit of a
discrepancy between the red of the body and the heads, and the heads
were a little more glossy. To my eye, both of these issues seem far
less prevalent with this release.
The rest of the work is just as impressive as before. The eyes are super clean and straight, the detailing on the belt and packs is impeccable, and they used just the right amount of shading on the body to bring out the skin texture and add realism.
Articulation - ***1/2
The body works well, but is slightly restricted due to some basic
design elements of the character.
The ball jointed neck is a little restricted by the long hair, but you can get some tilt and lean out of it. The rotating hinge shoulders and wrists work great, but the rotating hinge elbows can't bend as deep as a double pin. The Right Hand of Doom looks great, but the wrist is less mobile thanks to the chunky design.
The hips, knees, and ankles aren't bothered by the pants though, and the two piece boots allow for a reasonable amount of ankle posing. The coat has a thin wire on the edge, and the tail also has a wire inside, allowing you to add some additional personality to any pose.
Accessories - ****
While there's some obvious re-use with the first release, this
figure has some very nice additional extras that boost its score in
this category.
Obviously, there's the two portraits. That always goes a long way to upping the ante.
There's also several additional hands. There's three extra lefts and two extra rights to go with the pair of fists he comes wearing. These swap easily, with no worries about breakage.
As with the earlier release, he has the 2019 version of the Samaritan, and a small horseshoe. The gun has a rotating cylinder, and fits perfectly in the holster on his belt.
This guy gets a new addition with the sword, nicely sculpted and painted. They've also added a flame effect, which slips over the sword like a sheath. His arm joints are sturdy enough to hold the flaming sword in any position without issue.
To complete the look, he has his crown of fire as well. This crown 'floats' above his head, thanks to a really well designed attachment. A small chunk of his hair pops off the back of the horned head, and a new piece pops in, attached to a clear rod and the flame. It's a tight fit, with no obvious seam.
He also has his trench coat, and gets the additional tank top. More on these in the Outfit section.
Finally, there's the standard One:12 display stand with either the foot peg or the larger, clear plastic support rod.
Outfit - ***1/2
The outfit consists of his belt, boots, pants, tank top, and coat.
He comes in just the pants, with the tank top and coat in a separate bag. The pants are a little baggy around the knees, but overall the tailoring and quality are quite good. The two piece boot sculpt is fantastic, and while the ankles could use a smidge more mobility, it's a minor nit considering how good these look.
The brown coat is a really nice add, and obviously a critical piece. If you have both versions, I could see going with one without the coat, but if you only bought this exclusive release, you'll definitely want him wearing this duster. The quality is great, with excellent stitching and tailoring, and it hangs on him in a very natural way.
The t-shirt is less impressive. The fit is off, too baggy and boxy looking. I dropped him a half star in this category because of it, and this is a piece that will go in the accessories bin.
By the way, to put on either the coat or the shirt, pop off not just the hand of the Right Hand of Doom, but the forearm piece. It's designed to come off, and it is necessary to get these pieces of clothing on him.
Fun Factor - ****
With plenty of posability and accessories, you can mix up the look
of this figure on the shelf with regularity, and combine him with
the previous release for even more potential display fun.
Value - **
The extra $20 for this guy is driven largely by the 'exclusive'
label. While he has a couple more accessories, he also has a couple
less than the $80 release, so most of the extra money is going
toward the concept of uniqueness. Still, it's not a terrible price
considering the quality, and this is one of those rare times where
you could have completely skipped the regular release and gotten
only the exclusive, and had everything you needed.
Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing. Everything was sturdy and well made, and nothing felt
likely to break under normal handling.
Overall - ****
Usually, an exclusive is less inclusive than an original release,
with something unique added to make it desirable but not necessary.
This time, Mezco has given you a version that eclipses the regular
release, and allows you to skip that one and simply get the
exclusive.
However, even if you did by the original, you're still good to go. You can dress up the original in the coat and use the regular expression, and give this guy the flaming sword and flaming crown, adding a second great looking figure to the already excellent display.
