Introduction

I haven't watched The Walking Dead in quite awhile. I was a diehard fan, true, but when Negan and Glenn had their 'moment', that was it for me for awhile. Oh, once the series wraps up I plan on re-watching from beginning to end, but for now, I'm just a bit Negan'ed out.

Still, I love the show, and I'm smart enough to know that I'll always want the characters on my display shelf in sixth scale. I've been picking up the series from ThreeZero, and their latest release - the last man standing for me on the show, so to speak - is Glenn. There are two versions, a regular (that will run you around $170 depending on the retailer) and a deluxe with a couple extra accessories (and a slightly higher price tag at $185 or so). I'm checking out the deluxe tonight, and these just started shipping in the last couple weeks.

Packaging - ***
The boxes from ThreeZero are kinda unique. They go with a lower waste design, very tall and thin, really just big enough to fit the figure and accessories. Of course it's all collector friendly, and the cover includes a great shot of the real character for comparison. That's always a gutsy move.  It also sports the 'deluxe version' sticker. There's no instructions though, and while putting together the one accessory that requires assembly isn't very hard, including them would have been nice.

Sculpting - ***1/2
As I said, you get a great close up shot of the character right on the front of the box, making comparisons with the final sculpt quite easy.

And I really like what I see. The final release has a ton of realistic detail, from the finely stranded hair to the subtle skin texture. The minor wounds on his face aren't simply painted, but cut into the skin for added realism, and the texture on the lips and mustache looks great.

I don't love the eyebrows, but that's more of a paint issue than a sculpt issue. And there's something very slightly off about the nose (maybe the eyes are too close to each other?), just a smidge, that holds me back from a full four stars. But this is an excellent likeness, and one of ThreeZero's better in the series in this category.

He stands about 12" tall, and the body is less lanky than some of the previous releases.

Paint - ***1/2
Threezero has stepped up the paint quality recently, particularly with their Game of Thrones releases. This higher quality is showing up here as well.

The eyes look great, as does the hairline and skin tone. Everything is more realistic and life-like than the early releases in this series, and this improved look is much appreciated, particularly at this price point.

A good example of this is the wounds. The added paint makes them look painful and angry, with just the right amount of variation in tone and color. It's pretty impressive, and a step up.

However, my one complaint is with the eyebrows. They're pretty thick, pretty heavy, much more so than the character's. It's a minor nit, but still enough to hold him back a bit.

Articulation - ***
The underlying body hasn't changed much, but it does lack the long, lanky legs.

The one piece head and neck are a little less mobile than a two piece design, but there's still plenty of lean and tilt. The arms have the usual shoulder, elbow, and wrist articulation, but for some reason they went with the plastic skin covering. We saw this with characters like Daryl, but it made a bit more sense there. Here, the sleeves cover it all up making it less important, and the plastic skin reduces the amount of elbow movement.

The hips and knees work well, but like the elbows, the ankles are restricted. The one piece boot doesn't have much play, reducing the rocker movement quite a bit. The torso turns, leans, and crunches though, a big plus when trying to get natural poses.

Accessories - ***
He has a few, but not quite as many as I'd hoped. Remember, this is the deluxe version, which includes two extras.

He has hands of course, exactly the ones you'd expect and need. There's a set of relaxed hands he comes wearing, as well as a set of fists, gun grips, and tight grips. They swap easily, and there's a couple extra wrist pegs just in case.

He has three weapons. There's a large knife that fits neatly in a scabbard on his belt, although it can take a little effort to get it just right. There's also a handgun with removable magazine and sliding action, and this pops into the shoulder holster. Finally, there's a semi-automatic rifle, with a removable magazine, forward handle, and two piece scope. These extra bits come separate in the package, and are attached by you.

The deluxe includes two more goodies. He has a radio, with a clip to attach it to his belt, as well as a silver pocket watch. The watch has some excellent detail work on the face, and includes a real metal chain.

Outfit - ***1/2
The outfit includes the shirt, t-shirt, pants, belt,  and boots. Over the shirt he's wearing a nifty shoulder holster for the pistol.

All the materials, stitching, and craftsmanship are excellent, as is usually the case with ThreeZero costumes. There's not quite as much dirt and grime on this outfit as with some past releases, but it's still worn enough to look realistic.

There's a soft white shirt underneath the others that gives him just a little padding as well. The boots have a great sculpt, but as I mentioned earlier, they do tend to restrict the ankles. The shirt collar is a little big, but it's a really minor nit with an otherwise solid outfit.

Fun Factor - ***1/2
You've already got Negan, no?  I'm not sure if setting these two up together on your shelf would be considered 'fun', but the line has grown large enough to allow for plenty of posing and re-posing, creating all kinds of new scenes. Maybe Glenn gets the upper hand this time?

Value - ***1/2
We're seeing some really great work from ThreeZero, Asmus, and Qmx in the $180 price range. You can actually pick this guy up for a few bucks less if you skip the deluxe accessories. The quality of the sculpture and paint work are reaching a point where this becomes a pretty amazing deal.

Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing. While it might seem like you can't get the gun and knife in the holster and scabbard, it's just takes a little effort. Sure, the straps that hold them in place are not intended to open, but you can work the weapon in around them and back up for a tight fit.

The gun is pretty easy, but the knife requires inserting the blade into the scabbard first, moving the loop all the way to the top, and stretching it a bit to fit it over the end of the hilt.

Overall - ***1/2
Glenn is a great addition to the Walking Dead set up. Add a few zombies from other lines, and he can face off against walkers of every variety...or you can pair him up with Negan. Maybe he does better when he's in your world.

While I've been really happy with the improvements we've seen ThreeZero making in their Game of Thrones line (both Arya and the White Walker were excellent), their Walking Dead series has been a lot more hit and miss. Michonne great...Daryl not so much...etc. I'm hoping Glenn, hot on the heels of the other GoT winners, is a sign of the overall improvement across ThreeZero regardless of license.
