Introduction

Who's the most popular superhero? No, it's not any of those Avengers - it's Deadpool!  Okay, so perhaps that's debatable, but the fact that it IS debatable is a huge testament to how far he's come over the last few years with mainstream audiences.

There's been plenty of toys and action figures of course. Marvel Legends has honored him a number of times, but I haven't been much of an ML buyer lately. I left the whole Caliban wave, and the whole Kingpin wave, sitting on the pegs recently. But when I came across the Deadpool Corps set at the local Target, I couldn't resist.

Maybe it's because the Deadpool figure isn't the most important part. maybe it's because a Squirrelpool and Dogpool are just too damn adorable. Or maybe it's because i have plans for the nifty scooter in 1/12 scale. Hey, it could be a lot of things, but no matter the reason it was a must buy for me.

This guy ships with a deluxe Professor X with his chair, although I haven't seen one yet. These are popping up at Target and Gamestop stores, and you can expect to pay around $40 - $50.

Packaging - ***1/2
You can see all the goodies easily through the large window, and it's *almost* collector friendly. You will have to cut one plastic tie free, holding the Dogpool in place, but otherwise you'll be able to free the figure and accessories without any damage.

My only real complaint is there could be some instructions. Putting the bike together isn't rocket science, but a small instruction sheet wouldn't be a bad idea.  Oh, and put the stickers someplace a little more obvious, to avoid kids throwing them out accidentally.

Sculpting - ***1/2
There's a lot of great work here, from the cute Squirrelpool and Dogpool to the nicely detailed Deadpool. He stands just over 6", as you'd expect.

The animals are designed to sit on the back of the bike. The squirrel attaches directly to the back of the dog, fitting tightly in place, while the dog attaches to the seat of the bike, his paws resting on a properly positioned Deadpool. It works pretty well, but I did remove the scabbards from his back to get a better fit and see the dog's face better in photos.

The underlying expression on Deadpool seems to be surprise - at least it looks that way to me. The eyes are open wide, and the mask appears to show an open mouth as well. It works pretty well with the bike, and I'm assuming that's the display option most folks will go with.

The bike itself is nicely in scale. I plan on using it with other 1/12 figures, especially One:12. The only indication this is a Deadpool scooter is the logo on the front (the rest of the 'artwork' are stickers), and I can live with that.

My only real nits are minor. The fur on both animals could be a bit more detailed, and the thin handles on the swords on the back of Squirrelpool are really, really thin. One was pretty badly bent right out of the package, and it's going to take some real effort to get the thin plastic to straighten. Finally, the harness tends to ride up above his shoulders, and it's hard to get the belt down far enough on his hips to get a good fit.

Paint - ***
There's nothing exciting about the paint work, but considering the scale it's fairly clean. I'm particularly happy with Dogpool, who has quite a bit of variation in his costume and detailing.

I'm also happy they went with the stickers for the bike. It gives you a lot of customization potential - you can make your bike look the way you specifically want it to - and it means I can have a fairly clean accessory for other figures!

In the next photo, I popped the Bob head on the Deadpool body so you could easily see the head up close. No, this is not what it's for - more on that in the Accessories section - but it made taking photos of it easier. You can see the white teeth and silver eyes are good, but there's a little slop on both. This is a good example of the overall quality of the paint work.

Articulation - ****
This is a Marvel Legends figure - you expect amazing articulation. And you get it with Deadpool, who has a good hinge/ball neck, rotating hinge shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles, double pins elbows and knees, cut biceps, waist, and thighs, and a crunch torso.  All the joints work great, and they are tight enough to hold poses long term. All this articulation means you can get a decent looking riding pose on the bike as well.

But there's some articulation with the accessories too. The dog has cut joints on the neck and both front legs, and the bike has rolling wheels, turning front, and movable kick stand. That's a lot of movement across the board! I'm really happy they gave the dog some articulation, because you can get a much better overall look by turning his head to one side or the other.

Accessories - ****
The bike itself is an accessory, and pretty much makes this category. It's a terrific extra, and I can guarantee lots of folks - myself included - will be buying this set for the bike alone.

You do have to assemble the bike. Add the two mirrors and the horn and you're almost set. There's also a large sticker sheet, and you can use these to personalize your own look. Getting the mirrors on was a bit tricky - I think they messed up which shape connector they have on which one - but you can get them to snap in with a little effort.

There's also the two animals, Squirrelpool and Dogpool. These attach to each other and to the bike neatly. As I mentioned earlier, the sculpts and paint work are great.

Deadpool need some weapons of course, and he has two swords with removable scabbards that attach to the back of his harness tightly. He also has a small knife that fits in a sheath on his right calf.  These blades are super thin and bendy, and look better in the scabbards than his hands. I'm not a huge fan of the gold color, but that's probably just me.

Finally, there's a second head. This is not a Deadpool head, although you can pop it on him if you'd like (or lots of other Marvel Legends figures). I popped it on for a couple photos so you could see it clearly, but this head is Hydra Bob.  Bob is a buddy of DP's, and you'll need to have (or pick up) one of the Hydra Marvel Legends figures Hasbro put out awhile ago. If you're a big Deadpool fan, getting this Bob head is a great extra.

Fun Factor - ****
This is a really fun figure, and I think kids - who might have never seen the Deadpool films - would still love it. It's got a cool dog and a battling squirrel? There's a scooter, for God's sake!  What kid wouldn't love that? Even adult collectors can have great fun using this set to create all sorts of goofy displays.

Value - **1/2
The average Marvel Legend single figure costs around $20.  You'll pay around double that for this set, but you're getting the two animals and the terrific scooter for the extra cash. It's easily a solid, average value. You won't feel like you're getting anything extra for your money, but you won't feel ripped off.

Things to Watch Out For -
Not much. Everything is sturdy, but the blades (and sword handles for the squirrel) are a little thin and bendy.

Overall - ***1/2
Another terrific set from Marvel Legends, and it's going to be high on my list for best vehicle of the year. Yea, there's a Deadpool figure too, but that's not what's making you spend the cash. You gotta have the scooter - and a Squirrelpool and Dogpool are just icing on the cake. And getting to upgrade one of your Hydra figures to Bob? How can you say no!

Because of his popularity the last few years, Deadpool has gotten plenty of action figures. If you're looking for something high end and movie based, check out the first or second release from Hot Toys. If you're still thinking sixth scale, but want a more comic based version, check out the release from Sideshow. In a smaller scale, you have cheaper versions from Hasbro in the Marvel Legends series, and the more expensive versions from Mezco, including a regular Deadpool, X-Force Deadpool, and X-men Deadpool.
