Introduction

In just a few weeks, we'll be treated to the next installment in the Jurassic Park rebirth - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. How will this movie set itself apart from the second Jurassic Park movie? Hard to say, since the previews look awfully similar...I was going to make a Chris Pratt joke, but didn't want to imply any Avengers spoilers.

The toys are hitting widely of course, and I'm checking out some of the smaller two packs of dinosaurs tonight. I opened up three different sets - Dilophosauras and Dimorphodon, Velociraptor and Gallimimus, and the blue Velociraptor and a different color Dimorphodon. These two packs will cost you around $25 each, depending on the retailer.

Packaging - ***
The figures are exposed to the elements, but they are nicely positioned in battle with each other. Of course, it's not collector friendly packaging, but it is easy for parents to free them - just snip the rubber bands and the figures pop right out.

Sculpting - ***
While it might appear that there's a lot of articulation due to various visible cuts, most of these do not turn. That means the sculpted pose you see is pretty close to the only thing you get, making it all the more critical.

Some, like Blue, stand great on their own and have a very versatile pose. Others, like the regular Raptor, are less useful. The skin textures are good for a toy at this price point, but remember that these are smaller - Blue stands less than 4" tall for example.

There's a little white sticker that is quite hard to remove on all of them. For most, it's on the bottom of the feet, out of sight, but it's been placed in a very obvious spot on the wing of the Dimorphodon, hurting the overall appearance.

Several also have warped appendages, due to the package. The twisted foot on my Dilophosaaurus was the worst, and while it looks like there's a cut joint at the ankle, I couldn't get the foot to turn back into position.

Paint - ***
Again, it's important to remember that these are mass market toys, not high end collectibles. When you take that into consideration, as well as the price point, the quality of the paint is a bit more impressive.

There's some variation in skin tone and color, as well as a few small details. The eyes and teeth are well done, and I particularly like the red pattern on the 'flaps' of the Spitter.

Articulation - **
As I mentioned, there are a number of spots, particularly on the tails and legs, where it *looks* like there is a cut joint, but nothing is turning.

That hurts this score overall, since several of the figures are much less posable than I expected. Everyone has cut shoulders and hips, and the ones with larger jaws can open and close their mouth. The Gallimimus and Dimorphodon have neck joints that allow a good range of movement forward and back, and the flaps on the Spitter can move forward and back as well. Finally, the shoulders on the Dimorphodon's are actually rotating hinge joints instead of simple cuts, making the wings more posable.

Still, that's not much, and some of the warped limbs make standing tricky.

Accessories - **
Of the six I'm looking at, only the Dilophosaurus has an extra item - a small, acid spit beam. This can be placed in his mouth, but he does not fire it in any way.

Fun Factor - ***
While these aren't going to be at the top of the list for collectors, they are solid fun for kids. They can handle serious play, and they give you some smaller dinos to attack the humans. There's enough articulation for play, and the scale is good for smaller hands.

Value - **1/2
You can pick up these guys in two packs like this for around $20 - $25 each or as singles for $8 - $12, depending on the retailer.

Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing.

Overall - **1/2
Dinos, dinos everywhere! These two packs will give your kids a nice assortment of basic attackers for their Jurassic World play time, with decent quality overall. They aren't exactly collectibles, and I don't expect adult fans to go for them the way they will for the larger, better quality releases, but the younger set should have a great time with them.
