Introduction
I loved the 2017 re-adaptation of IT, the classic novel from Stephen King. The trailers for the second half of the story have me greatly anticipating its release in September as well. NECA has hit the license hard, releasing several versions of Pennywise, all of which I've picked up so far.
To add a little spice to the display, they also offered a
"Pennywise Accessory Set". This set includes seven additional extras
to add to your diorama, creating an even creepier scene. It just
started shipping, and will run you $30 at most retailers.
Packaging - ***
The extras come packed in a hanging box similar to the figures
themselves. It's relatively collector friendly, but some of the
smaller bits have tape holding them in the plastic tray and there's
several twisty ties to snip.
Sculpting - ***1/2
One of the extras is a 'bust' of Pennywise, in scale with the rest
of the series. This bust sits underneath a plastic recreation of the
street sewer opening. And yes, you can pop this new head off the
shoulders, use it on any other NECA Pennywise body, or pop any of
the other heads on this bust.
The sculpt on this head is as good as the rest of the releases, and it has the craggy, cracked forehead. The hair detail is great, and while there's not much of the rest of the body, there's enough to work properly within the sewer.
The sewer piece has sculpted grass, as well as flowing water along the street. The effect is created by using a translucent plastic, which allows enough light to pass to create depth in the surface. The overall look is decent, and the size works well with the scale of the figure.
Two of the other more interesting extras include the Pennywise Jack-in-the-box, and the standing Pennywise doll. Remember the creepy room filled with dolls? Off to one side was a terrific Easter egg, a doll of the original Tim Curry Pennywise! They've recreated it here, in scale, and I have to say it's possibly the highlight of this set for me. The sculpt is great, and it really adds to the display.
The sculpts on the rest of the goodies are good to excellent as well, and everything is clean and sharp. These accessories are designed to go with the 7" scale figures in the rest of the NECA horror line up.
Paint - ***1/2
In most areas, the production paint work is excellent. There's a
spot of slop here or there, but it's really minimal.
The best work is on the doll. The face is a little clumpy, but it actually creates a very porcelain appearance. There's a drabness to the colors that indicate age, and all the details are neat and sharp.
The extra head/bust look good, but some of that slop I mentioned shows up with his nose. I do like the work on the face and hair, where it's ashen and dark, and the upward tilt of the eyes lines up great with the sewer diorama. His nose is the only real slip across all the pieces however.
The jack-in-the-box also looks terrific, with a toy-ish yet ghoulish coloring. The worn logo on the front looks very realistic as well.
Articulation - ***
These might just be 'accessories', but there's still some
articulation.
Of course the balloon has the same wire 'string' we've gotten with other Pennywise figures from NECA. It bends and smooths back out easily, and is thick enough to withstand repeated posing.
The Curry doll has several points of articulation, including a terrific ball jointed neck that allows for great tilt and lean movement. He also has a cut joint at each shoulder and each ankle.
The jack-in-the-box has cut shoulders too, although moving them was a bit tough. The crank can turn, and the lid obviously opens. And since he fits in the box with a round peg in a round hole, you can turn him slightly side to side as well.
And finally, the bust has a ball jointed neck, as you'd expect. As I mentioned earlier, you can swap heads around between this extra and the various figures if you'd like.
Accessories - N/A
Technically, it's all accessories, so I'm counting this category as
'N/A' this time around. However, I thought it would be the perfect
opportunity to list out the contents in a single spot to make it
crystal clear.
You get the street opening to the sewer, the 'bust' of Pennywise to place inside and under the opening, the extra red balloon with no printing on it, the S.S. Georgie boat, Georgie's severed arm, the Jack-in-the-box with Pennywise (two pieces, the box itself with closing lid and turning crank, and the doll that can be attached when you open the lid), and the Curry Pennywise doll. Seven extras in total!
I haven't really mentioned the extra balloon, arm, or boat very much. It's not because they aren't great - they are. But all three came with other figures, so they are only useful if you didn't pick up the specific variations.
Fun Factor - ****
These are designed specifically to add to your already existing
uber-cool Pennywise dioramas and displays. They add some fun in
creating new looks, and the addition of the arm and boat will be a
big plus for those who didn't buy all the previous figures.
Value - **1/2
Thirty bucks is a little steep, but you are getting some brand new
extras here, and there's quite a bit of work involved with several
of them. Considering the quality, I have no problem going with an
average value score. Regular readers know a **1/2 here doesn't hurt
or help my final Overall score.
Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing.
Overall - ***1/2
This is a nifty little set of extra goodies that you'll find pretty
useful with your previous Pennywise figures. It's certainly not a
must have, but if you're looking to create a great diorama, there's
some very useful pieces here.
