Introduction

Recently, I discussed how Mezco are the masters of re-issuing and re-using parts and pieces to create multiple variations of the same character, or entirely new characters that are similar in appearance. The One:12 Collective series is a shining example.

While their recent Ascending Knight Batman figures are a good example of simply switching up the color scheme to get multiple releases (and hence, spread fixed costs over a larger production run), the Spider-Man figures are a great example of small variations to create multiple distinct looks.

Tonight I'm checking out the third Spider-Man they've come up with - the PX exclusive Black Suit version. This is not the first Spider-Man in the One:12 Collective. Mezco has already released the Miles Morales version, as well as the more classic look. There's still a Homecoming version to ship, and I doubt that's the last Spider-Man we'll see them do.

This guy is now shipping, and will run you around $80 at most online retailers and local comic shops.

Packaging - ****
The PX (Previews) exclusives get these cool metal tin boxes, and I love them. This one is particularly attractive, thanks to the high gloss black color and bold white emblem. Inside, everything is packed safe and sound in a couple plastic trays. This is the ultimate example of a package that can be re-used for many purposes, long after the figure has been on the shelf.

Sculpting - ***
Unlike regular release One:12 figures, this exclusive only has one portrait. Bummer. But it's a well done, Venom-like head sculpt, based on the general concept of the black suit Spidey from the comics, and it's not a head that was available with either previous version.

The eyes are not merely painted, but raised up from the smooth mask. That's about it when it comes to sculpting though. The hands look good, and are posed in various ways to work with a maximum number of stances. The suit is smooth, with no sculpted detail.

The head's a smidge big in my opinion, although it's more of a design decision on their part than a mistake. He stands about 6 1/2" tall, which also seems just a little too big for the character to me.

Paint - ***
The costume is two colors - black and white. This is one of those rare occasions when there is nothing in between.

The edges on the white, both on the eyes and back of the hands, are a bit sloppy this time. Thankfully, there's no stray black marks within the white, and the large chest symbol looks good. This is a really small figure - keep that in mind - but Mezco has set a high bar in this category with past releases, even for themselves.

Articulation - ****
No problem here, with plenty of articulation and little restriction from the stretchy suit.

The neck works great, with a ball at the jawline and the torso. The shoulders, elbows, and wrists allow for nice arm poses, even in the tight costume. The torso bends, tilts, and leans, and the hips, knees, and ankles can create very deep stances. You should have no trouble finding a fluid, natural look on the shelf, and find new ways to change it up regularly when the mood strikes.

Accessories - **1/2
Most One:12 releases have a ton of extras, but this exclusive is lacking in this department.

There's six hands in total - a set of fists, a set of tight grips, and a set of wide wall climbers. They swap easily, and I had no worries about breakage.

They don't always stay on particularly well though, thanks to the other accessories. There are four web blasts of different lengths and shapes. These attach to the wrist with a loop, and the hand pops on over it to keep it in place. This doesn't work great - there's not a lot of room on the wrist peg, and keeping the hand in place with the web blast is tricky.

There's a fifth piece of webbing, but this one is a long double ended wire, which can be used in a million different ways. The gripping hands can hold it neatly as well.

The final accessory is the standard display stand. You can use a simple foot peg with the stand, or the more complex translucent support, perfect for leaping and jumping poses.

That's it though, and all of the web pieces are re-used from previous releases.

Outfit - ***
The tight black outfit is made from a more rubbery, less cloth-like material than spandex. It fits nicely, and the smooth texture makes the black color look oh so much better. It's also very well tailored, and is stretchy enough to allow plenty of posing.

I do worry a bit about it losing some of its elasticity over time, but we'll have to wait and see on that one. I'm also not thrilled with the size of the stitches on either side of the torso, which are a little out of scale.  But overall, it's a nice looking costume and I think the choice of material was a smart move. Folks have complained about the texture and patterns of normal cloth in this scale in the past, and that will not be an issue here.

Fun Factor - ****
There might not be a ton of stuff here for the price, but the figure is still a ton of fun. Extremely posable as all Spidey figures should be, and with a unique look that sets him apart from the other releases, this guy kills it in this category.

Value - **
The exclusives have usually been $80, so the price is no surprise here. We aren't getting quite as much this time around though, which caused me to drop this score a half star.

Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing.

Overall - ***
Another nice exclusive, filling out the Spidey variants with a popular look. It's a little light on the accessories, and Mezco has set a pretty high bar for themselves on the paint ops, but he's still well worth adding to the Marvel collection.
