Introduction

Hiya Toys has been quietly creating some of the coolest figures in 1/18 scale out there. It's not a super popular scale right now, with many companies - including Hasbro and Mattel - backing off a bit from the sort of production we've seen in the past. But Hiya is looking to create super articulated, high quality additions to this perennial favorite.

Tonight I'm checking out three of their newest releases based on the popular DC game Injustice 2. I'll be looking at Red Hood, Harley Quinn, and Swamp Thing. All three are PX Exclusives, and will run you about $20 each depending on the retailer.

Packaging - ***
Similar to their Predator and Aliens line, these come in a sturdy window box. You can see the figure and accessories clearly, and the overall design is attractive. These aren't completely collector friendly - you will have to peel off some tape holding in the tinier accessories - but it's close.

Sculpting - ***1/2
Remember, these are based on the game designs, so if you're looking for something purely comic book based, you may be disappointed. However, fans of the game will recognize them instantly.

These are 1/18 scale, and that translates to Red Hood coming in at just over 4", Harley just under 4", and the larger Swamp Thing almost hitting 5". This size makes the detail work on all three that much more impressive.

Red Hood has some variety in the textures, giving the jacket a different look from the helmet or the chest armor. Edges are sharp and clean, and pieces that could just be painted on, like the strap around his neck, are sculpted instead. The belts and straps around his legs have a ton of detail work, and overall it's quite nice for the size. My only negative is his 'holsters', which seemed oddly inadequate for the guns.

Harley is just as good from the neck down, with tons of small detail work on the clothing and costume. Her holsters are perfect, and the guns fit neatly inside. From the neck up I'm not quite as thrilled, but the slightly soft almost ceramic look to her face may be more of a paint issue than a sculpt issue.

Finally, there's Swamp Thing. The larger body is a mass of vines and bark, intertwined to create the musculature and armor. Of the three sculpts, I think he's my favorite, perhaps because there are aspects that remind me of the tv show.

Paint - Harley **1/2; Swamp Thing, Red Hood ***
Unfortunately, the paint is a bit sloppy this time around. Of course, some slack must be cut - these are small figures. But none of them has a stellar paint job overall.

Red Hood is the best, with some clean lines and very nice work on the costume. The helmet shows wear and tear, and while there's some slop - like on the black belt around the neck - it's relatively minor for such a tiny figure.

Harley is a bit more problematic. I' don't love the white on the face - it's not white enough to look bleached, more like iZombie Liv than traditional Harley. As I said, it ends up looking like a ceramic doll, not how I really picture her.  There's also slop along the collar down onto her chest and neck, and smaller details, like the silver on her belt, are haphazard.

Swamp Thing doesn't have those problems, but that's largely because he doesn't have too many paint details. Instead, he went to the school of McFarlane Paint Ops, where a lot of wash gets thrown at him to bring out the details. It's right on the border of too much, but your mileage may very well vary, since it depends on how much gets wiped off in the production process.

Articulation - ***
There's no shortage of joints on these guys, although some of it is better engineered than others.

All three have a great ball jointed neck, and you can get plenty of lean and tilt. Harley's pig tails get in the way a bit, but not as much as I anticipated.

The arm articulation on all three includes the rotating ball shoulder, elbow, and wrist. Arm poses were pretty easy to obtain and maintain.

Harley and Swamp Thing have rolling chest joints along with a cut waist, and I was able to get some reasonable lean in most stances. Red Hood really only turns, thanks to the armored torso.

Red Hood has rotating ball hips, double pin knees, and rotating hinge ankles, but I couldn't get as much movement out of the ankles as I'd hoped. Harley's legs swaps in ball hips, and thanks to the lower butt sculpt, her legs can't move backward at all. She also has single pin knees, and almost zero rocker movement in her ankles. Her feet came bent inward, and I could not get them freed up enough to correct it no matter how I tried. She was still able to stand on her own, miraculously, but it looks pretty odd.

Swamp Thing also has the ball hips, with double pin knees and rotating hinge ankles. Again, there wasn't much rocker movement.

Overall, it's more articulation than we generally see in this scale, but I did wish it worked slightly better.

Accessories - Swamp Thing **1/2; Red Hood ***; Harley ***1/2
There's a pretty big different between extras across these three.

All three come with the silver base, with one permanent foot peg. There's also two small connectors to attach one base to another.

Swamp Thing is the lightest in this category. He comes with a set of fists to go with the gripping hands he is wearing in the package, and a large knotty club. It has the question mark design, very much like the Riddler.

Red Hood does much better. He also has an extra set of hands, but he has two very nicely sculpted guns, as well as an itty bitty knife. This knife can slip into a sheath on his right calf. And just in case he needs a little more power in his weapons, there are two different style grenades.

Harley comes with an extra set of gripping hands as well, and two handguns unique in design to her. Her small knife is also unique, with a very Harley paint job. For those close range battles, she has her classic mallet and baseball bat.

Fun Factor - ***
While the wonky-ness of some of the articulation makes it tough to find a lot of great poses, these are still a lot of fun. If I were an 8 year old kid, I'd be all over them like hair on a bear. Even collectors and adult fans of the game will enjoy finding ways to display them at home or work.

Value - **1/2
Twenty bucks for a 1/18 scale figure is a bit of a tough sale - that's the going rate for many 1/12 scale figures at the local store. But as imports, these are going to be higher, and most of the quality, particularly around the sculpts, overcomes much of the cost concern.

And yes, in the photo below Red's elbow pad has slipped down to his wrist. They are separate pieces, and you can remove them if you'd like. Harley's are permanent, at least on mine.

Things to Watch Out For -
Not much. I would be careful with the ankles, particularly Harley's, as the can be stuck and difficult to loosen up.

Overall - ***
At the end of the day, I think Swamp Thing was my personal favorite out of the set, but all three have strong selling points. The sculpts make these stand out, and while the paint slipped a little this time (particularly with Harley), the overall quality is still high.
