Introduction

I enjoyed Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, I really did. The first film in his trilogy was good, the second was one of the best, and the third...well, let's just pretend it never happened.

But when Tom Holland came along, he rewrote who Spidey was on screen.  He truly has captured the comic book vibe for me, and he's easily my favorite Spidey actor of all time. And Spider-Man Homecoming? Perhaps the best Spider-Man movie as well.

Hot Toys has been releasing lots of Spidey's of course, and it took awhile for this one to hit my porch.  This is the Homecoming deluxe release, with extra goodies, and was originally around $265. Expect to pay north of that now.

Packaging - ***
Attractive, but fairly standard stuff. It's all collector friendly, and there's not too much plastic wrap to remove. They've included some brief instructions as well, and there's a few warnings as to the care and handling of the figure.

Sculpting - ****
There are two portraits here - a masked version of course, and the unmasked Tom Holland. Both are excellent.

The masked version is set apart from the usual by the use of an actual permanent cloth mask. Not only does it look screen accurate, the use of the cloth material means that it actually matches the rest of the uniform exactly.  A sculpted texture can look okay, but only with matching cloth can the entire costume appear correct.

The eyes are removable too, held in place with magnets. You can swap in any set of five, and even mix and match to your hearts desire. I was a little worried about damaging the cloth with my fingernail when I was popping them out, but if you aren't doing it constantly you should be fine.

Using the cloth was no small feat either, thanks to the necessary seam. You have to have a seam in the cloth along the top of the head, but getting it to lay flat was no simple trick. It still pooches out ever so slightly, but it's such a minor nit as to be inconsequential.

The Holland portrait isn't new - we've gotten it before - but it's just as nice this time around. Great skin texture, nice stranding in the hair, plenty of detail all around, and a very, very accurate portrait to the actor. The expression is neutral, but the eyes are looking off slightly to his left, which works well for plenty of poses and avoids the mannequin effect.

He's a little shorter of course, coming in around 11 3/4" tall.

Paint - ***1/2
There's not a ton of paint on the standard costumed character, but the small plastic sections look good, and the eyes are all neat and clean.

The Holland portrait has a nice subtle transition at the hairline, and the eyes are clean and sharp. The lips and eyebrows look great as well, but the skin tone is a little flat. Still, there's not much to complain about here, as you'd expect from Hot Toys.

Articulation - ***1/2
One thing every Spider-Man needs to be is posable - it's his bread and butter. This one is quite good, but the outfit does cause some minor issues.

The neck works great, with either head sculpt. Lots of tilt and lean is possible, and the covered neck doesn't seem to get in the way.

The shoulders are actually ratchet joints, clicking into place. Combined with the elbows and wrists, they will give you plenty of great web shooting poses.

The hips, knees, and ankles work well, and there's plenty of rocker movement in the feet. This allows them to stay flat on the ground, even in deep stances.  There's a half foot joint too, although it's a bit restricted by the costume. The hips are the most restricted, due to the tight fit around the pelvis.

The torso turns and tilts too, although like the hips it's a bit restricted by the tight costume. Overall I was able to get plenty of good poses out of him, but I do worry that deep bends in the hips, knees, or elbows could stretch out the material over time.

Accessories - ****
This is the deluxe version, and it gets the 'deluxe' name for a very good reason. There's a ton of accessories, and even the standard release had lots of goodies.

There's extra hands of course, to go along with the relaxed pair he comes wearing.  There's some wide grips, some 'climbing' hands, a set of web shooting hands, and a set of tight grips. These swap easily enough, and there's a couple extra wrist pegs just in case.

I mentioned earlier that there's a bunch of different eyes, five sets in total. He comes wearing a set with normal, open eyes. Then there's a set with very wide open eyes, a set of slightly squinted eyes, a set of very squinted eyes, and a set of the small, red eyes. These are held in place with a magnet, and are fairly easy to swap.

He wouldn't be Spider-Man without webs.  The web shooters he comes wearing on his wrists are 'closed', without any hole.  There's a second set with a properly placed hole where you can attach one of five different web extensions. There's two short blasts and two longer strands. You can also attach one extra umbrella of webbing to the end of either of these longer strands.

The fifth piece of webbing has a L shaped handle. The tight grip hands can hold onto this 'handle', and you can display him in his classic upside down pose. At least in theory. The instructions make it clear that you should pull it through the hand, not push it. Even doing that, I managed to pretty much destroy the thing, and now I'm looking for one that's getting parted out on ebay. If you're going to try using this piece, I'd be extremely careful.

There's also a set of plastic webs to go under either arm. These are held in place with magnets, and it works surprisingly well. I wasn't expecting a great fit, but you can get them to line up pretty well with a little effort, and they stay in place when you're handling him.

I already mentioned the second set of web shooters, but there's also his Science Today book (with printed pages), headphones, and backpack. You can use these to complete his nerdy look.

To go with the Holland head sculpt, there's a separate cloth mask. This isn't intended to be worn, but rather held in his hands as though he's just taken it off.

The regular version finishes up with a standard display stand, with support rod. Nothing super special here, but you can use it to create some cool poses.

The deluxe adds in three more extras, all of them quite nicely done. First, to add to his costume, he has his blue hoodie and yellow jacket. You can fit both of these over his costume, but it's a very tight fit. The tailoring is excellent, but you'll want to take your time getting them in place. Both are made from top quality materials with excellent stitching, and the blazer includes the nifty patch.

Finally, the deluxe also has the Vulture's helmet, sort of a souvenir if you will. Again, it's not meant to be worn, but held as a trophy of the battle.

Outfit - ***1/2
The outfit is well constructed, and the stretchy material is less restrictive than we've seen with some past attempts. I'm still worried about it not snapping back after long periods, but we'll see how that plays out over time.

The various sculpted bits look good too, and are very tightly attached. The texture on the red cloth looks great, and the transition between the red and blue material is practically seamless.

I don't love the way it looks in the pelvis and hips, but this is more of an issue with the body underneath than the costume itself.

Fun Factor - ****
With this many accessories and this posable of a figure, you're going to find a million ways to set him up on the shelf. I'm just hoping that those creative poses won't effect the costume long term.

Value - **1/2
This guy was originally around $265. That's a pretty hefty chunk of change, similar to the recent DX Jack Sparrow. This isn't a DX though...but it's pretty much the same thing, considering all the swappable eye plates and the buttload of accessories. I'm fine with paying this much when I get this much, especially when the overall quality is so high.

Things to Watch Out For -
I mentioned a few things through the review, but the most important is in regards to the thin, L shaped web strand. If you're going to fit it in the gripping hands, take a lot of time and be patient. It will also help if you soften the hands up a bit with some hot water first. If you really want the hanging upside down pose, go for it, but if that's not your cup of tea, I'd just set this piece of webbing aside and let it be.

Overall - ***1/2
Hot Toys has done a terrific job in general with the Spider-Man movie license over the years, but I think this is perhaps the best of a great bunch of figures.  I have a few nits, sure, but this figure will be perfect for the Avengers display, and is can easily go toe to toe with the best Thor, best Cap, and best Iron Man they've produced.
