Introduction

I haven't been hitting up the Marvel Legends lately, but it's not for a lack of releases on the pegs. Hasbro has been cranking them out this year at a surprising clip, but my passion for them has been waning.

But the Cull Obsidian wave (also known as the 'Avengers Infinity War Wave 2') piqued my interest.  Obsidian is the BAF, and the wave is spread out with a couple Infinity War figures, a couple comic book figures, and the subject of tonight's review - Ant-Man and the Wasp based on the movie of the same name.

These will run you around $20 each, and are shipping to all the usual retailers. They started hitting a few weeks ago, so you should be able to find them pretty easily at this point.

Packaging - ***1/2
Nothing new here, but the big window in front shows of the figure well, it's easy to pick them out on the peg thanks to the 'BuildAFigure Cull Obsidian' label on the top left, and the back provides info on the specific character, who else is in the wave, and who has what piece of Obsidian. Oh, and of course it's all collector friendly, a rarity with mass market packaging.

Sculpting - Ant-Man ***; Wasp ****
Both of these figures have two heads - masked and unmasked. The masked heads look terrific, replicating the helmets from the film quite well considering the scale. And yes, these are 1/12, with Ant-Man coming in at about 6" and Wasp just slightly shorter.

The heads swap easily, and one advantage with the Ant-Man helmet is you can't see the eyes. That means he can also carry it when you have him sporting the bare head, unlike Wasp. Her eyes are clearly visible inside the helmet, and they look terrific.

The bare heads are where the sculpting really shines. Ant-Man has a very Paul Rudd expression, but they went beyond realistic into cartoony. The smirk is a nice touch, and they translated it correctly into the eyes, with one shut slightly more than the other, but it's pretty extreme, even in hand.

The Evangeline Lilly Wasp is excellent, one of their best female sculpts in the Marvel Legends series. The hair doesn't have a ton of detail, but the pony tail style looks great, and the accuracy to the actress really sets it apart.

Paint - ****
The paint work on both is great, with almost no slop or poor quality anywhere on the suits or faces.

The eyes are done with the new printing technique, more like tampos than paint. They are straight and even on both figures, including inside the masked Wasp head. Skin tone, lips, hairlines, even the smaller details on the costumes are neat, and edges are sharp all around.

I do wish the Wasp's wings had something to bring out the sculpt detail a bit more, but that's a pretty minor nit with an otherwise excellent paint job.

Articulation - ***1/2
While these are Marvel Legends, and Marvel Legends is synonymous with articulation, these are on the slightly less posable but more realistic bodies.

Ant-Man has a decent ball jointed neck, and the heads swap easily. The rotating hinge shoulders, cut biceps, double pin elbows, and rotating hinge wrists allow for plenty of natural arm poses, and the rotating hinge hips, cut thighs, double pin knees, and rotating hinge/rocker ankles all have a good range of movement. He also turns at the waist, and bends at the chest.

Wasp is a bit more restricted, with: the ball neck; rotating hinge shoulders, elbows and wrists; rotating hinge hips; cut thighs; double pin knees; and rotating hinge/rocker ankles. She also has a rocker joint in the torso that allows for some turn and tilt movement, but lacks any waist joint. Her wings are also articulated, and can move up and down independently.

While the articulation isn't quite as good as some Marvel Legends figures, it's certainly above average, and you can easily get fluid, natural poses. The plastic is a little soft again this time however, and I'm hoping that we don't see too much of that across this wave and in future waves.

Accessories - Ant-Man ***1/2; Wasp ****
Both figures include a BAF piece for Cull Obsidian. I'll review him last in a couple weeks with the final two figures in the wave.

The only other extra that Ant-Man has is his helmet, but that's a big plus since you get the masked and unmasked look. I'm a huge fan of extra heads, particularly with the movie specific figures.

Wasp also has her bare head, but she adds in several other goodies. She has her wings of course, but if you don't want her to wear them on the shelf, she has a second backpack to put in their place. She also has a second set of open hands, and these swap easily with the fists she comes wearing.

Fun Factor - ****
Marvel Legends are always fun, and these two make a perfect pair for any kids who are fans of the film. Plenty of useful articulation, good accessories - all you need is a villain or two, and you're all set.

Value - **1/2
At $20 each, these have remained about the same price for the last several years, and are competitive with other mass market 1/12 scale lines.

Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing.

Overall - Ant-Man ***1/2; Wasp ****
These are two of the best looking movie based figures this year, although I will say they went a tad too far with the goofy smile on Ant-Man. The work on Wasp is outstanding though, and overall they are perhaps the best mass market figures based on the film.

I have the other four figures in this wave ready to go, and I'll cover another pair next week.

I haven't checked out as many Marvel Legends in the last couple months, but I'll be finishing up the Cull Obsidian wave over the next couple weeks. The most recent past review was of the Ghost Rider and Flamecycle, a great pair.
