Introduction
While I continue to buy every Batman Black and White statue that DC Collectibles produces, I have been reviewing them with less regularity. The latest release is based on the artwork of Norm Breyfogle, and stands out even more than usual, making him well worth a brief discussion.
Breyfogle is a fellow Michigander, at least originally, and is well known for his flowing capes and dynamic style. This release started shipping a couple weeks ago,
and will run you around $70 at most retailers.
Packaging - ***
Nothing super special here, but it does show off the statue fairly well, and it keeps the multiple pieces safe inside the foam eggshell trays. Oddly enough, I didn't
see any mention on the exterior of its limited nature, and there's no COA, but the bottom of the base does have the edition size (3000) and number included.
Sculpting - ***1/2
As I mentioned, this is a rare multi-piece Batman Black and White statue. The flat base is one piece, the body and limbs a second, and the head and cape the third.
These assemble pretty easily, and the head is held in place with a strong magnet.
He stands about 7 inches tall fitting in with the rest of the series. The overall design captures Breyfogle's style beautifully, and I love the contrast of the stock still body and flowing, dynamic cape.
The cape is fairly thick, which is a good thing - you're much less likely to break it when handling. It also has a very subtle texture that sets it apart from the rest of the statue, and is the sort of sculpt detail we usually done see in this series. When you're this far into a long term series, it takes a lot for any one release to stand out from the pack. This design does.
Paint - ***
Unfortunately, there's a few slips and slops on the paint work, but nothing too extreme. Some of the edges are a little wonky, particularly around the bat symbol, but
the majority of the colors are clean and consistent. In hand, the lower face is a little more ashen colored than I like, but it's a minor nit. Using a gloss finish on
the boots and gloves adds a little visual flare as well.
Value - ***
In a world of ever increasing prices for most collectibles, DCC has managed to keep these statues right around that $70 price point. That earns them a slightly better
than average value ranking from me.
Things to Watch Out For -
Take a little care when assembling, but the cape is fairly sturdy and shouldn't cause you any real issue.
Overall - ***1/2
This was a tricky design to actually implement in three dimensions. Engineering a solution that would capture the dynamic look of the cape yet not make it too fragile
or difficult to handle was not easy, but they pulled it off perfectly. The paint work could be a little better, but at this price point, I'm quite happy with the final
result.
