Introduction

I've been cutting back on my Hot Toys Marvel and Star Wars purchases. Too many of the same characters, and too many characters that don't speak to me makes for fewer pre-orders. But when Lando Calrissian went up, there was no way I was missing out.

He's a much needed addition to the original trilogy, and it's hard to believe it's taken this long for Hot Toys to get around to him. He just started shipping here in the U.S., and was running around $235 at retail originally.

Packaging - ****
We don't see too many new things from Hot Toys in their Star Wars line up, but we get something unique here. I haven't picked up the other 40th Anniversary figures, but I'm assuming they have this same packaging scheme.

There's the usual outer slip cover, and it follows the consistent design. The overall package is also completely collector friendly, and while the slip cover is a little thin, the interior box is very sturdy.

And very different. The interior box is designed to look old school, and has a great looking flap that mimics the look of the toy packaging of the 80's. This is a very fun design, and is cool enough to get me to add a second packaging photo, further down the review.

Sculpting - ****
This sculpt is so good, I suddenly want a Colt 45. This is most definitely Lando, and the Billy Dee likeness is dead on. The detail work in the hair adds a tremendous amount of realism, and the fine skin texture further supports the life-like appearance.

They went with a slight smirk, nothing major, but enough to add some personality. I'm glad they didn't get too scene specific, since it would reduce the posing potential. This expression works for the character, and allows for a broader range of poses.

I'm going to mention the body here, because they added some interesting padding to better fill out the clothing. It works really, really well on the legs and butt, where the added material creates a very realistic look, but I'm not loving the torso. With the cape in place it was fine, but without the cape the padding messed up the tailoring a big with the shirt.

Paint - ****
We've come to expect a stellar paint job with every Hot Toys figure, and they rarely let us down.

Lando's darker skin tone looks great, and there's some freckling and variation to add a facet of realism. The hairline has a subtle transition created by the paint, and the mustache and eyebrows are clean and neat. The eyes are straight and even as well, and there's not a single thing I can find to whine about with this paint work.

Articulation - ***1/2
The TrueType body works as well as ever, and the costume provides very little restriction.

They went with the one piece head and neck for aesthetic reasons, but it does mean a little less of a natural tilt or lean. The shoulders, elbows, and wrists work great, but with the cape in place, you won't go crazy with the arm poses.

The torso turns, tilts, and leans, and the hips, knees, and ankles work great. The padded legs can take deep stances, and the soft leather boots allow the feet to remain flat on the ground.

The collar of the cape and the bottom edge have a wire. The end of the wire kept poking out on the collar, which is not something I'm accustomed to seeing with Hot Toys. The wire along the bottom edge was quite useful for posing, but I wish they'd given us one along the front edge as well.

Accessories - ***
He's not loaded, particularly considering the price point.

He has four extra hands to go with the relaxed pair he comes wearing. There's a set of fists, plus a gun grip right and a specific grip for the right to hold the itty-bitty communicator. They swap easily.

The mentioned communicator looks great, and there's a wrist link as well. The strap for the link is kinda cheap though, and you'll want to take some care with it.

There are also two blasters - the traditional rifle, and his own pistol. Both look great, and fit nicely in the gun hand.

There's the usual base with a crotch support, and there's a second card for the base that looks like a Cloud City floor section. As with many of the Star Wars releases, there's also a cardboard backdrop. These things are always too small, but I'm sure some folks like them. I used it for the close up portrait photos above.

This backdrop is different than the earlier ones, although I don't know if this change is new or just recent. Rather than using two separate pieces of cardboard as side supports, there are permanent supports on the back that fold out, somewhat like a photo frame. It's definitely an improvement.

Outfit - ***1/2
The outfit includes the shirt, pants, cape, belt, and boots.

The pants fit great over the padded legs, with perfect tailoring. The shirt isn't quite as clean of a fit, but it looks good with the cape in place.

The cape is the obvious critical piece here, and it's beautiful. The interior material looks great, and the quality of the stitching and construction is top notch. I've mentioned the wires, but there's another unique feature. There are two loops that fit over the shoulders, designed to hold the cape tightly. As I understand it, this is accurate to the on screen costume.

The large WWE belt is a bit toy-ish, but the boots are amazing. In fact, as much as most folks will rave about the cape, it's the boots that really impress me. These high tops are leather, and have a real zipper on the side. They allow for great ankle movement and look amazing, the perfect combination.

Fun Factor - ***
There aren't a ton of extras, and the cape doesn't allow for a ton of different poses, but there's enough potential to add some fun for the collector who likes to re-pose once in awhile.

Value - **
Original price on this guy was around $235, depending on the retailer. While he's nice, he's not particularly complex, and really should be around that $220 price tag. If you can snag him closer to that, you can add the half star here for an average value.

Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing.

Overall - ***1/2
This is a great figure, and a great score. But I have to admit it, I wasn't as amazed as I expected. While the figure is terrific, I was a bit let down, and I fear my expectations were set too high.

The price point is a little high, and there's a few nits here and there, but nothing major. I can't put my finger on any one thing that missed the mark, but overall I just didn't love him as much as I thought I would.

Don't get me wrong. I'm extremely happy I picked him up, and would do it over again without reservation. He's just not the clear Figure of the Year winner I thought he'd be.
