Introduction

Diamond Select Toys released their first wave of action figures based on the hit HBO show Westworld several weeks ago, and tonight I'm wrapping up my look at them with a review of Dolores Abernathy.  I've already covered both the Man in Black and Dr. Ford.

Dolores will run you around $20, maybe a little less, depending on the retailer. There's actually a second version of her in the cowboy costume, exclusive to Wal-greens. These should be available at online and brick and mortar stores near you right now.

And if you don't know who Dolores is, you haven't been watching. She is the central character, the one the entire story revolves around. If you haven't started watching, stop reading and go do it right now.

Packaging - **1/2
The packages aren't collector friendly - you'll tear them up getting the figure and accessories out. They are also quite plain, and considering some of the terrific visuals on the show, that's a bit of a disappointment.

Sculpting - **
Both Ford and MiB have excellent portraits. You'll recognize who they are immediately, not just the character but the actor as well.

Sadly, I would have no idea who this is without the costume to tip me off. The face seems a bit squished, and the structure and features don't remind me of Dolores at all.  The long hair is chunky, and the expression rather bland. You can argue that fits her - it still doesn't do much to create recognition.

The outfit is the better sculpt.  There's a nice cloth-like surface texture, and the smaller details on the belt are good. Underneath the long skirt she's wearing cowboy boots and the white pants, but it's irrelevant since the skirt isn't removable.

The long arms are also oddly out of scale. It's almost as if they didn't take the joints into account when determining the arm length.

Paint - **1/2
The paint work is clean enough, but not exceptional. There's some slop on most of the smaller details of the costume, and the eyes are a bit wonky. I'm not a huge fan of the hair color or wash either. Based on the price point, it's an acceptable job, but not much more.

Articulation - **1/2
While the men folk were quite articulated, poor Dolores suffers from the confines of her dress.

The ball jointed neck has some tilt and lean, but the long hair restricts it. The best articulation is in the arms, where the rotating hinge shoulders, double pin elbows, rotating hinge wrists, and cut biceps allow for quite a bit of posing.  They pins seemed a little soft, so take care breaking the joints free at first.

The torso has a rolling chest joint, which is very useful in adding forward and back posing. Side to side tilt is tougher, and turning the upper torso and shoulders more than a smidge is impossible.

Underneath the skirt, the legs have all the usual articulation, but it's also completely useless. The thick skirt takes away any ability to pose the legs.

Accessories - **
She is the lightest of the three in this category.

She comes with her bag of groceries, which is sculpted flat on the bottom to rest on the ground. You can recreate the scene where her dropped can of food is the turning point in her day, day after day, although it would be better if there was an actual loose can.

Her only other accessory is the simple black oval stand with the foot peg. Thanks to the stiff dress, you really don't need it.

Fun Factor - **1/2
Combined with the other two you can create some reasonable dioramas. On her own, she's not particularly fun.

Value - **1/2
At $18 or so, she's pretty much in line with other figures in this scale on the market right now. If we'd gotten another accessory or two with her, I would have bumped her the extra half star.

Things to Watch Out For -
The elbows seemed particularly weak, so take some care when first loosening up the joints.

Overall - **1/2
Unfortunately, Dolores is not nearly as nice as the previous two figures in the wave. Maybe it's just harder to do beautiful women. Maybe it's just harder to find the hook to give the sculpt that eye catching look. Whatever the case, she's well below the quality of Ford and the MiB.

Still, the overall quality of the line has me hooked, at least through another series. The next wave should be out in 2020, and I'm hoping all three match Ford in likeness and quality.
