Introduction

A long standing tradition at Toy Fair is exclusive goodies. It's been going on for decades now, and many companies do it as an incentive to the press attendees to visit and discuss their upcoming product.

But while many do it, few do it as well or as consistently as Mezco. They've produced Toy Fair exclusives for a variety of their licenses and products, but the last few years have been focused on One:12 Collective figures. Last year, it was the 'Agent Edition' Gomez, a terrific figure that represented their company mascot in his best International Man of Mystery outfit.

This year is the 20th Anniversary for Mezco. Perhaps fitting, this month is also the 20th anniversary of this website! Sadly, I won't be doing anything nearly as cool as the fine folks at Mezco. They have produced this 'gold anniversary' edition of Gomez, a truly epic figure.

They will hopefully be handing them out to the credential press that attend their event this weekend. I say hopefully, because with the current shipping and manufacturing delays coming out of China, I'm betting they spent some very long nights this week attempting to get everything in place.

This is one of those times where the 'value' section will be N/A. This is a giveaway, and you'll end up paying after market prices to obtain him. What those end up being will be anybodies guess.

Packaging - ****
Mezco does some amazing packaging for their special releases, and this one is a perfect example. The large metal lunch box looks fantastic, with some terrific lithograph artwork and an anniversary sticker on the lid. Inside are three layers of plastic trays holding the figure and all the accessories, with lots of plastic wrap and tissue to ensure everything is safe and sound.  There's even a Certificate of Authenticity, something they don't do very often.

Sculpting - ***
There are two portraits with this figure, but in terms of sculpt, they are the same head. Because of the gold theme, there's not much detail in either one, and the expression is quite neutral. This is not a surprise when you consider one of the heads is gold plated, while the other is a plastic stand in for the gold look.

The hands are designed to work with the accessories, and all of them are nicely detailed, much like you've seen with other releases.  He stands about 6 1/2" tall without his 'feelers'.

Paint - ****
While the special 'feature' here doesn't lend itself to a lot of sculpt detail, it does really throw this category into the stratosphere.

The plastic head is merely cast in a sorta, kinda, gold color. This same color is used for the body, as well as all the accessories. There's a nice consistency across the figure and extras when using this head. The one area that's a bit different is the neck, where there's more of a metallic finish. It's not too noticeable with the plastic head, and it's really important for the main head.

That's because the main head IS metal, and is 18k gold plated to boot. Yes, it really is gold plated. I have a lot of action figures - a lot. But I racked my brain and I can't remember another that's actually gold plated.

The head is quite heavy of course, making it a bit tougher to use with more extreme poses. Still, the trade off is well worth it, and the plating is very even, very consistent, and damn gorgeous.

And if all that isn't cool enough, he has some trippin' cool painted socks, with the little logo on them! Also notice in the photo below how nicely the metallic painted neck blends with the plated head.

Articulation - ***1/2
There's nothing new or surprising with the underlying body, but the double neck joint - at the torso and the jawline - allows for a ton of head tilt and lean, and the suit is not particularly restrictive when it comes to the rest of the articulation.

The elbows, shoulders, and wrists allow for nice, natural arm poses with a variety of the accessories. The hips, knees, and ankles can take short to very deep stances, and maintain them even with the heavier head. Getting him to remain on the skateboard with the metal head was tough, but it was the only situation where the extra weight really created any issues.

The torso crunches, turns, and leans, and you should be able to create nice looking relaxed and dynamic poses without a lot of effort. This kind of torso articulation allows you to break up those straight lines that can make a pose look stiff. And don't forget, as with all Gomez figures, the antenna are articulated as well. The ball joint where they connect to the head is present with both the plastic and gold plated versions.

Accessories - ****
If you've bought any of the Gomez figures in the past, you'll recognize a lot of these extras. In fact, I recommend checking out my review of last year's Agent Edition to see some of them in particular situations.

Let's start with the hands, the many, many hands. He comes wearing tight fists, but there are 6 more lefts and 6 more rights to swap in! There are various gripping hands, as well as three with extended fingers - a pointing index, a pointing index and middle finger together, and just an outstretched middle finger, for when you want a little more attitude on the shelf.  These all swap easily, and remained in place while I was working with him.

I already mentioned the plastic and gold plated heads, but they also go a long way to boosting the score in this category. Again, swapping was quite easy.

All of the extras are done in the same gold color with occasional highlights painted in black. The boombox is a nice example, where they used the colors to great effect. Of course, the boombox also opens up, and there are foam trays designed to slip inside. You can then disassemble the rifle and slip it into the slots in the trays, perfect for Gomez to carry it with him.  To see the rifle inside the boombox, check out my Agent Edition review - it works exactly the same here. You can also assemble the individual pieces in several ways, creating different guns.

I did have some issues this time with the rifle falling apart while I was working with it. The scope, clip, stock...they kept dropping off at the most annoying time.

There's also a sheet of stickers you can use with the boombox or the hover board, and a small card with Gomez artwork.  To go along with the rifle, there's an extra ammo clip, as well as an extra silencer. You may be able to get this silencer to fit on the pistol, but I didn't want to force it.

Yes, there's also the pistol, with an extra clip of its own. Along with this Luger style pistol, he has the short barrelled version, also available with earlier releases but this time in gold. There are two bullet effects to go with these guns, which have thin posts that can be inserted into the barrel tips. These effects have a gold-ish hue to them as well.

I mentioned the hover board earlier, and there are magnets to hold his feet to the top. Getting him to balance with both feet can be tricky, but it is doable. It's far easier with the plastic head, however.

To round out his weapon arsenal, there's two large canister grenades and his sword. There's a sheath for the sword of course, which fits over his shoulders with a strap. The strap and buckles are a bit oversized, but it's a minor nit.

There's a couple extras you can use to accent his costume as well. There's the long scarf, which has a poseable wire running through it, and the shoulder bag. The scarf is made from a gold lamé, very shiny and very pretty. The bag has the Mezco Gomez M logo printed on the material, a very, very cool detail!

You could miss it in the package, but there's also a very tiny watch with a gold band and black face. If you put it on him, don't forget it's there when swapping hands!

Finally, he has the usual round display base that can be used with either the foot peg or the large, translucent support rod. This time the Gomez logo is done in gold, of course.

Outfit - ****
The outfit consists of his jacket, shirt, tie, pants, and shoes. Yea, he's got some painted on socks too, but I already discussed those.

The tailoring is immaculate, with a perfect fit all around. Even the tie, tough for sixth scale producers to get right, is right in scale with this much smaller figure. The collars are properly sized, and everything hangs neatly on his body.

The shoes are an amazing sculpt, and the bright paint job looks terrific with the black clothing. The quality of the materials is top notch, and the stitching and assembly is excellent as usual.

Fun Factor - ****
Tons of accessories, great articulation, and a fun concept - you can't get much better. You should have no trouble finding plenty of great poses, and finding new ones in the weeks and months to come.

Value - N/A
This guy is given away by Mezco, so the secondary market is your only option. This makes this sort of figure a center piece of any collection.  The going rate for past Toy Fair exclusives varies pretty wildly, and there have been quite a few variations on Gomez so far, so guessing where he'll land long term is tough.

Things to Watch Out For -
I mentioned the tiny watch earlier, but it's worth mentioning again. It looks great on his wrist, but if you forget he's wearing it and swap hands, it would be extremely easy to lose.

Overall - ****
It's hard to believe that Mezco is 20 years old. I remember seeing them at Toy Fair for the first time, and thinking they had a certain something to set them apart. These two decades have seen a lot of other companies rise and fall, but Mezco has managed to ride out the difficult periods, and remain a creative influence on the entire industry.

This particular Gomez is for the hardcore One:12 fans.  The gold plated head is one of those truly unique creations - it reminds me of the time Palisades produced the Wedding Kermit and Piggy for the nuptials of Ken Lilly - and will certainly be a holy grail for many.
