Introduction

I have my tickets for a Saturday showing of Captain Marvel, and I can't wait. It's been months since I was anticipating a theater release like this, and I have high hopes based on everything I've seen so far. Unfortunately, far too many 'men' have taken the opportunity to embarrass the rest of us, but I'm hopeful the Neanderthals will eventually die out.

I already checked out the Skrull called Talos, as well as the 'street clothes' Captain Marvel, the Gray Gargoyle, and the Starforce Commander from the latest Marvel Legends line based around the film. Tonight I'm finishing up the wave with the movie Captain Marvel and Nick Fury, Genis-Vell, and the Build-A-Figure of a Kree Sentry.

These guys are hitting retail stores pretty hard right now, and will run you around $20 each.

Packaging - ***1/2
Nothing too exciting here, but the package does have the new plastic cover on the tray, rather than the plastic windows. No twisties, rubber bands, or tape is necessary with this design, making it completely collector friendly. On the back is a nice write up on each specific character, as well as a legend or key showing which character in the wave has which BAF piece.

Sculpting - Nick **1/2; Captain Marvel, Genis-Vell ***; Kree Sentry ***1/2
While the sculpts on most modern Marvel Legends figures have taken a huge step forward, there's still a couple weird issues here.

Nick Fury is my one disappointment. It took me the longest to find him too, making the disappointment all the more palpable.  He looks like he's had a slight stroke, with a drooping mouth and slightly mushed face. They somehow managed to make a younger Nick Fury look old - the final result isn't good. The suit is great though, and I can see it getting used for a lot of customs. He stands about 6 1/2 inches tall.

Then there's Genis-Vell. If you don't know who this is, he is the son of Mar-Vell, the first Captain Marvel. If rumors are to be believed, we might see Mar-Vell in the film, but Genis-Vell here is a comic based rendition. While there's lots of re-use with the various body parts, the portrait is decent and the Nega bands and armor pieces look good. He comes in at 7 inches tall.

Captain Marvel is in her full costume, and the masked portrait looks terrific. The detail work on the mohawk is great, and there's a ton of texture to her overall outfit. She comes with a second unmasked portrait as well, and this sculpt is better than poor Nick. It's not perfect - the hair needs more detail, and the face is too wide across the eyes - but she doesn't look warped. She stands 6 1/2 inches tall right to the top  of the mohawk.

The big winner in this category is the BAF. The Kree Sentry has a great looking armored body, with a unique head sculpt that catches the eye. The design has a 70's-80's robot vibe to it, which I really dig. Sure, there's some Thanos feel to it as well, and I know a lot of people thought there was some sort of spoiler about Thanos in the movie when they saw the figures with just the arms or legs packed in. But I like where they went with this guy, and in this category he's my favorite. He stands 8 inches tall.

Paint - Captain Marvel **1/2; Nick Fury ***; Sentry, Genis-Vell ***1/2
There's some slop here that holds back some of the better sculpts.

Thankfully, that's not the case for the Kree Sentry. His paint work supports the cool sculpt, and while there aren't a ton of small details, what's here is clean, particularly on the head and face.

But the winner this time is Genis-Vell, thanks to some creative choices. The underlying body is a dark translucent plastic, with some specks embedded in it and some on the surface, giving him a star-like or cosmic appearance. Other details are painted on the exterior, adding another layer. It's a great look for this particular character, and fairly unique in the overall Legends line up.

On the opposite end is the rather sloppy Captain Marvel. There's a terrible edge along the mask and face, the white eyes are inconsistent in coverage, and various costume details exhibit over spray and poor edges. Her alternate head is a little better, but the flat face paint makes the wide face more obvious, and there's a couple stray marks as well.

Nick Fury is someplace in the middle. Not a terrible paint job, but nothing to write home about either, and the work on the face, lips, and hair line do nothing to improve the wonky sculpt.

Articulation - Genis-Vell **1/2; Nick Fury, Kree Sentry ***; Captain Marvel ***1/2
These are Marvel Legends - you know the articulation will be good. But I did have one surprise, and not in a good way.

Captain Marvel had the best overall articulation. The neck joint, with both a ball and a hinge, has plenty of front to back and side to side movement, although the long hair unmasked portrait will be much less mobile. The rotating hinge shoulders, elbows and wrists will give you plenty of arm poses, and the hinge hips, cut thighs, double pin knees, and hinge/rocker ankles work great. Even the rolling ab works well, and doesn't break up the look of the sculpt too badly.

The Kree Sentry has a similar number of joints, but several have a lesser range of movement. The neck is one example, as are the ankles, which have little rocker movement. The single pin elbows are pretty restricted by the muscled sculpt, but I was able to still get some decent 'big guy' poses.

Fury is a dude in a suit, and while he has plenty of old school articulation, he's still a dude in a suit. The arms and legs can take solid poses, but the torso is restricted by the coat.

But the only disappointment was Genis-Vell. He's plagued by a combination of super tight joints, like the knees, and super floppy joints, like the torso and hips. This weird combination made getting him to simply stand was tougher than it should be, and the number of natural poses was limited.

Accessories - Captain Marvel, Genis-Vell ***; Nick Fury ***1/2
Regular readers know that figures get **1/2 here when they only have a BAF piece. All of these guys - other than the BAF itself - do better than that. Not much, but still better.

Of course, Genis-Vell and Nick have the BAF pieces. They both also add a handgun - a more traditional version for Nick, and a space blaster with a funky retro design for Genis. The sculpts are good on both, but the paint ops are non-existent.

Nick gets the highest score because he has the coolest extra overall. He comes with another version of Marvel's 'cat' Goose, and yes, there's a very good reason I have that in quotes. If you don't know about Goose's background, I suggest you check it out.

Anyway, Goose has a great sculpt, all in chains and a muzzle (which is a pretty good indicator to me that his back story in the film will be similar to his backstory in the comics - how often have you seen a cat in a muzzle?), and the sculpt even includes a properly designed scruff on his back for him to be held high.

Captain Marvel is the one figure in the entire wave that does not have a BAF piece. She does however have the extra head sculpt, as well as a second set of open hands to go with the fists she comes wearing. These hands and heads swap easily enough, but stayed in place while posing and playing with the figure.

The Kree Sentry gets a N/A here, because he IS an accessory, rather than a separate figure. Occasionally you'll get an accessory for a BAF, but I consider that going way above and beyond.

Fun Factor - ***1/2
These guys might have a few nits, but they are still a ton of fun thanks to the articulation and character selections.

Value - **1/2
The average price for a Marvel Legends figure has been $20 for several years now, and it's great to see it remain there. You might even get these for a few bucks less, depending on sales at your local brick and mortar stores.

Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing. There were no worries about breakage or damage, and everything is sturdy and well made.

Overall - Nick Fury, Genis-Vell, Captain Marvel ***; Kree Sentry ***1/2
I'm really like the BAF here much more than I thought I would. The individual parts weren't impressing me, but once he was together, I found him quite striking.

The rest are fine, but not great. Had the body not been floppy on Genis, I would have scored him better, and Nick's smooshed face was a bummer. Captain Marvel's paint issues hold her back as well, making these three figures average fare.
