Introduction
You knew Mezco would do a fair share of Wolverine figures in their One:12 Collective action figure series. C'mon, it's Wolverine. You can't have a big name like that and not take advantage of it. Besides, he's gone through plenty of variations in costume and style over the years, no reason Mezco couldn't come up with multiple ways to riff on those variations.
But it was a little surprising - at least to me - that they gave us an Old Man Logan. Perhaps the film Logan helped drive the decision, and seeing the dude as a heroic senior citizen has a certain appeal to those of us, shall we say, who are getting more mature. Getting him in this format was a surprise, but of the pleasant persuasion.
He's been up for pre-order for a long time, but finally started shipping a couple weeks ago. You can still pick him up at a few places for around
$80, depending on the retailer.
Packaging - ***1/2
Sturdy materials - check. Interesting graphics - check. Collector friendly - check. Yep, it hits all the high points. I don't love the brown,
although I fully understand the decision to use that particular color combo.
Sculpting - ****
Unfortunately, this figure only comes with one portrait, breaking the usual pattern for a One:12 release. I'll be more abusive about this in the
Accessories section, but let's just say it's a disappointment for now.
But the one sculpt they did give is outstanding. Remember, these are small figures, done in approximately 1/12 scale. They are slightly bigger than true 1/12, with the average male right around 6 1/2" tall. Of course Wolverine is shorter, and this older version is 6" from hair to toe. And yes, that's mighty small.
And yet there's a ton of detail in the face sculpt, with wrinkles and age galore. There's also some excellent finely sculpted hair, both on his head and his chin. This attention to minutia extends on to his neck and arms as well, and the overall sculpt is quite impressive. The stern expressions suits him as well, and works with just about any pose.
Paint - ***
The paint work is solid, but not quite as exceptional as their very best work has been.
The hair looks good, with a nice wash effect to create the grey appearance. There's a few random marks, and the hairline isn't quite as clean as it could be, but considering the scale it's still quite good.
We didn't get two Logan portraits, but we did get a baby Hulk. The paint work here is also well done, with the green skin being clean and consistent in finish and color. His hairline is also a bit hit or miss - they tried to include some bangs with just paint, and it doesn't work particularly well - and it's the one area that isn't quite at the level we've seen with other releases. The eyes on both faces are the most impressive feature, but the weathering and aging on the backpack is worth noting as well.
Articulation - ***1/2
Plenty of joints for Logan, although the shorter, squat body isn't quite as fluid.
The ball neck works well, and the shoulders, elbows, and wrists work together nicely. The double pin elbows are a bit obvious in just the t-shirt, but it's a compromise I'm willing to make for the sake of posability.
The torso turns and leans, and the costume allows it to stay in new poses. The hips, knees, and ankles allow for short to deep stances, although I do wish the ankles had a *little* more rocker movement to them. The sculpted two piece boot is a more restrictive than some of their other designs.
Accessories - ***
I've already mentioned the loss of one portrait, and my ensuing disappointment. Considering the price point, let's hope this doesn't become a thing.
He does have three sets of hands, which swap easily but remain in place while posing. He comes wearing fists, and there's a set of bladed hands of course. He also has a set with a wide grip right and a tight grip left.
I mentioned Baby Hulk earlier, and he comes swaddled up in a solid sculpt. There's a nicely worn and weathered pack that he fits in neatly, which can be worn over the jacket or t-shirt, depending on the look you're going for. It's a much tighter fit over the shoulders of the jacket though, and I found the look over the shirt to be a bit more natural.
There's also an old man hat to go on old man Logan. The brim is a little thick and rough, but the overall scale is pretty good. There's also a long coat, which I'll discuss in greater detail in the next section.
And of course, there's his display stand with both the foot peg and the larger, clear support post for leaping and jumping poses.
Outfit - ***
This is one of those rare occasions where I'm not loving the outfit.
The best part of the entire wardrobe for me is the belt. The western buckle has a ton of detail, and the textured belt itself fits great.
I've already talked about some of the issues with the hat, like the thicker brim, but the included coat is lacking as well. It's thicker than most of the outfit pieces, with a slightly large collar. You can hide some of the issue with the straps of the pack, and you can adjust the size of the collar using the wire that runs along the edge, but it's still not quite the fit we've seen with layers on earlier figures.
The shirt and pants look good, and the tailoring and quality are fine. The boot sculpt is excellent, and I love the two piece design, but they are big, making him look a little like a kid wearing his dad's boots. While Logan is on the short and stocky side, his feet wouldn't be quite this disproportionately large.
I think I'll be going with just the t-shirt and pants on the shelf, but your mileage may vary.
Fun Factor - ***
While you don't have quite as many options with accessories and extras this time, he's still a very fun figure, and you should have no trouble
coming up with some ass kicking poses. It's nice to have a Logan on the shelf that doesn't look like every other Wolverine release we've seen in the
past too, and this design bridges the comic divide pretty well.
Value - **
They've gone up in price, with most regular releases like this now selling for $80. If he had that second portrait, I would have been fine with it,
but he's not loaded up quite the same way as most other $80 releases in the series.
Things to Watch Out For -
Not much. I would take some care when popping the bladed hands on and off and avoid squeezing the blades themselves together, but otherwise you
should be good to go.
Overall - ***
I seem to be picking on Wolverine a lot lately. It's not that I don't love the character, but this one just isn't thrilling me the way some of the
other releases have. Perhaps it's the lack of accessories (especially a second portrait), or maybe it's my lukewarm reception to the coat and hat.
Maybe I'm just being a cranky old man myself. I'm glad I picked him up, and my issues aren't around quality, but he's not going to leap into my top
ten for the series.
