Introduction

I went to see the film Yesterday over the weekend (and yes, it was enjoyable and funny), and they had a Harry Potter joke. Why? Because it's Harry Potter of course.

The books and films remain an amazing cultural phenomenon, one I don't expect to see abate any time soon. While Star Ace has had its ups and downs with their series of sixth scale figures based on the characters in the movies, I'm very glad they're still cranking them out, filling out the display with some of the B and C players. I wish every company would commit to licenses with as much dedication.

Their latest is Ginny Weasley, the younger sister of Ron and future life partner of Harry. This is a bit of an early review, but she should be shipping any day now, and will run you around $200 - $210 depending on the retailer.

Packaging - ***1/2
This one is slightly different, and I'm hoping we see more of this design. It appears to be wrapped in newspaper, with stories of the magical world. There's a nice cigar band style slip as well with a great photo of the actual character. It's all collector friendly, and it's quite sturdy thanks to some very thick cardboard.

Sculpting - **
One of the areas where the line has struggled is with the likenesses, particularly when contrasted against the rest of the current market. Unfortunately, Ginny falls short.

To give them a slight break, it's not like she's an easy face to do. There's nothing too extreme, nothing too specific, for the artist to really clamp on to. Her nose is her most unique feature, and they did get some of the particular shape translated here.

The skin texture is soft and young, but not smooth like a doll would be. The lips and eyes are attractive, but the shape of the face is off a bit - longer and more horsey than the actress.

But the biggest issue is the hair, and more specifically, the part. They parted the hair in a standard way - down the middle - when they did the rooting. One of the other key features of her appearance is she parts her hair over her left eye with a side part. This might seem minor, but it is most definitely not. I worked with the hair quite a bit out of the box, trying to get the section to the left of her face to hang straighter, with the section to the right pushed up higher on her forehead. It's better, but it can't come close to actually having it parted on one side.

She's young of course, and stands about 9 1/2" tall. She should fit in pretty well with the teen version of Harry.

Paint - ***
There is nothing extraordinary about the paint work, but it is clean and neat.  The eyes have a little bleed, but are straight and even, and the color is engaging. The eyebrows and lips look good, and the skin tone is consistent and accurate.

The hair is on the shiny side, but I'm not one of the people that this bothers.  However, I do wish they'd added a little hair color along the top of the forehead to blend in the hair line with the face. We saw this on their own Bellatrix, as well as the ThreeZero Arya, and it works quite well in hand.

Articulation - ***1/2
The underlying body is quite articulated, and I had no trouble getting natural stances and battle poses.

The ball jointed neck has plenty of lean and tilt, as does the torso and waist. You can break up straight lines with these joints, and add a ton of personality.

The shoulders, elbows, and wrists allow for good arm poses, and the clothing is not particularly restrictive. The hips, knees, and ankles work great too, and she can take short to deep stances and maintain them easily. The ankles had plenty of rocker movement, allowing the feet to remain flat on the ground.

There's a wire along the bottom edge of the cloak, and you can add some dynamic flow in certain poses by using it. There's also a wire around the cloak hood, although I'd be surprised if you actually use the hood. But the wire provides a different benefit - by using it, the hood remains very flat on her back.

Accessories - ***1/2
She doesn't have quite as many extras as they had originally advertised, but what's here is well done and useful.

Of course, there's a couple extra hands. She comes wearing a set of open hands, and you can swap in three different gripping rights, designed to work with different accessories. The hands swapped easily, and I was able to work with her without knocking them off, but one or two additional left hands would have been nice.

She has two books - Hogwarts: A History and Magical Theory. These do not open, but have good sculpts and nice looking sticker covers.

Of course she has her particular wand, which fits nicely in one of the specific hands. She also has a 'training' broom for Quidditch, a re-use from other figures, but a nice addition nonetheless.

Perhaps the best extra is her soft leather book bag. It's large enough to easily fit both books - and maybe a couple more she can steal from one of the other figures. It's extremely well made, and far better than a sculpted version.

Finally, she has the display stand, which includes the shorter and longer support rods.

Outfit - ***1/2
There isn't anything to shockingly new here, but the quality is still quite high on the costume.

This is the Gryffindor school uniform, with the logo patch. I don't love the iron-on style of the patch, but the rest of the cloak, including the wiring I mentioned earlier, is really well done. Underneath she's wearing the school sweater, tie, white shirt, skirt, and long socks. The materials and construction on all of these pieces is quite good, although the sweater is just a smidge bulky.

There's a pair of black shoes to finish off the look. I was going to take the cloak off, but I found it more work than it was worth. The front does not have closures, so you'll need to take it off over the head. It's doable, but not as simple as you might assume. However, going with a sewn shut front means less worries about snaps or hooks, and a tighter fit overall.

Fun Factor - ***
Add her to the mix with your teen Harry, Hermione, and Ron, and you're good to go. The body gives you some real posing potential too, and the extras are all useful in creating an interesting look on the shelf.

Value - **
The one other area where she takes a hit is here. She's around $210 at most places, and considering the quality you can get from some companies in the $180 range, it's a hard sell on that extra $30.

Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing.

Overall - **1/2
From the neck down, there's very little to complain about here. The articulation is great, the costume is well made and well tailored, and the accessories are useful. The problems all come in from the neck up.

I can live with the paint work, and I have to be totally honest - I can't confirm much about the sculpt, because the incorrect hairstyle gets in the way of seeing much else. I think the look of this figure, or at least the recognizability of the character, would go up exponentially with a proper side part, and the hair combed across the forehead. It wouldn't solve all the issues, but it would be the one change that would make the biggest impact.
