Introduction

It's been quite awhile since we saw a Walking Dead figure released by Threezero. Now we have two hitting back to back, with Morgan reviewed tonight and Ezekiel very, very soon.

Morgan Jones was a great addition to the original show, and has had a terrific run on the spin off Fear the Walking Dead. He's an ideal candidate for a figure, and I'm hoping this sudden drop of two figures means we'll see several more go up for pre-order.

You can pick up Morgan at most online retailers for around $175.

The slim box is completely collector friendly of course, and it has a great shot of the actor in character on the cover. It also sports the logo for the company in a much more conspicuous way, with no capitalization and apparently a space between three and zero.

One of the things I really like about these boxes is the size. There's no wasted space, and the boxes are just big enough for the figure and accessories. This slimmer design means less storage space for those of us keeping the package when we open it up.

Sculpting - ****
Threezero - sorry, three zero - has really improved in the accuracy of their sculpts in the last couple years. I liked their Negan a lot, but I have to say this is my favorite portrait of the series so far. It's an excellent likeness, capturing the look of Lennie James on the show extremely well. The close cut hair, the slight beard, the shape of his head, nose, and lips, the eye placement - it's all on target.

It's also hyper realistic, with a nice skin texture that transitions cleanly into the hair line and edge of the beard. The expression is stern, but not overdone. He's serious, as he most often is, but not emotional. He's an even keel kind of dude, very zen most of the time, and this expression works well.

They went with a one piece head and neck, and while I prefer separate pieces for posing, you can't argue with the realistic look of the single piece design.

The sculpting work on the various accessories and armor pieces is excellent as well. The breast plate and shoulder pads look like metal thanks to the realistic texture, and the small detail work on the guns and knife is quite nice. The hands are done in basic poses that work with the majority of the accessories.

Paint - ****
Supporting this excellent sculpt is an excellent paint job. Again, they've really stepped up their game when it comes to the quality of their paint operations.

The skin tone is very life-like, with freckling and variation. The color transition to the hair and beard is great, and really impressive considering how tight and detailed the hair sculpt is. The glassy eyes are terrific, and the lips and eyebrows are clean but realistic.

If three zero can maintain this level of quality with their paint work on this license and others (especially Game of Thrones), I'm going to be a very, very happy camper.

Articulation - ***
The underlying body has all the usual articulation, and the outfit is not particularly restrictive.

The single piece head/neck does mean you get a little less tilt and lean, but not much. A bigger problem is the head pops off quite easily, making it hard to adjust without some frustration.

The arms work well with the accessories for one and two handed poses, but like the head, I found the wrist pegs tend to pop out quite easily. While that can be great for swapping hands, it does lend some frustration to posing.

The hips, knees, and ankles all worked great, and you should be able to keep the feet flat on the ground in short to medium stances. The hockey pad armor is a bit restrictive, but not as much as I anticipated.

Accessories - ***
He doesn't come heavily loaded, but considering the price point, I was fine with what they went with.

He has six extra hands to go with the relaxed set he comes wearing - fists, tight grips, and gun grips. These have the largest number of combinations with the accessories and poses.

He has four weapons - his staff, a handgun, a rifle, and a knife. The staff is is trademark of course, and it fits nicely in the gripping hands in any pose. There's also a sheath for it to wear on his back (more on that in the Outfit section).

The guns have super realistic sculpts and great paint jobs. The leather strap on the rifle can work in a number of ways and the handgun fits neatly in the holster provided. There's also a sheath for the large knife, and the handle of the knife has a very nice deer antler sculpt.

They don't provide stands, but these guys stand great on their own.

Outfit - ***
The outfit has several layers, including a t-shirt, long sleeved shirt, vest, pants, boots, and various pads.

The tailoring and quality is excellent, and the various pads come already assembled. That's a big plus, as you know what a pain getting straps for various pads in place can be. They all appear to be removable if you feel the need, but I prefer they come assembled to start. The holster and belts all come in place as well.

The only piece not in place is the sheath for the staff, which is supposed to be fitted around his chest under the armor and buckled. The problem is the buckle isn't quite large enough to easily pass the strap through. I tried for about 15 minutes, and found I was just ruining the end of the strap. These leather straps are slightly thicker, and it's a very tight fit. I think you could use a needle and thread to make it work, but I haven't reached that point yet. However, this issue was the big reason for the slightly lower score here.

Fun Factor - ***
He has already joined the rest of the cast on my zombie shelf, fighting off the undead. I suspect I'll pose and repose fairly often, and there's enough potential with the weapons to make for some interesting looks.

Value - ***1/2
Getting a sixth scale figure of this quality for under $200 is almost unheard of. Only a couple companies are doing it right now, and they should be recognized for saving us cash and still providing excellent releases.

Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing! If you do manage to find a simple way to get that strap through the buckle, let me know.

Overall - ***1/2
While not every Walking Dead release they have produced has been a home run, the line has been solid overall, and looks great on the shelf. However, this figure takes it up a notch, and is easily my favorite in the series so far. There's a few nits, but if they can manage to maintain this level of quality and keep the price around $180, I will be singing their praises.
