Introduction
Mondo has a new kind of collectible out there - the Mondoids. These unusual designs cover a bunch of licenses, including many horror properties. Tonight I'm looking at the pair for the Jurassic Park franchise - the T-Rex and the Raptor.
Expect to pay around $20 - $25 for these, depending on the character (bigger characters, bigger price) and the retailer. I'll be covering some more
very soon.
Packaging - ***
The Mondoids come in a clam shell style package, very sturdy, very rugged, very tough to get into. It's not collector friendly of course, but for
the MOCers, it does show off the figure well and will hold up to handling and shelf wear.
Sculpting - ***
These things are a little tough to describe, and even photos don't really do them justice. Think of a cup and saucer - the head is the cup, the body
is the saucer. The head sits on the flattened body, but can also be it's own thing if you so desire.
The bodies are sculpted with movie specific details. For example, the T-Rex is crushing a jeep and chomping on a tire, while the Raptor has a recognizable hat behind him. The textures are well done, and the accuracy is relatively good, considering the unusual designs. These are a hollow vinyl, but have very good sculpt detail.
The height is in the 3 inch range, depending on the character. The T-Rex is bigger than the Raptor, as you'd expect, but other characters aren't necessarily in scale across licenses. When I check out some of the horror icons, I'll do a group shot to show what the whole series looks like together.
Paint - ***
The paint work is generally clean, and I like the shading and wash used on the lizard-like skin. The teeth are a tad sloppy, but the soulless eyes
and patches of slime look good. The best work is on the skin tones of the T-Rex, where there's a really nice graduation from one color to the next.
Value - **1/2
Most of these will run you around $20, and that's a pretty standard price right now for collectibles in this scale. These guys are pretty unique in
terms of design however, so it's tough to make a straight comparison to something like a Pop! figure or a smaller action figure.
Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing!
Overall - ***
Every company looks for something unique and kitchy they can produce that will take off with collectors. Sometimes it works - think Beanie Babies or
Pop! figures. Other times, not so much. But they will always keep trying, looking for that design that becomes the next pet rock.
Will Mondoids strike a chord with fans? It's tough to say, but it's clear Mondo is hoping so. They have already produced quite a few, and are using it - like their Tiki mugs - as a cross promotional design across lots of licenses. I'll be covering some more in the coming weeks.
