Chucky from Dream Rush

Please welcome Truehorror as our new guest reviewer tonight, covering the very cool Chucky from Dream Rush.  TH is going to be starting up a website soon at Truehorror.net - check it out! Tell us all about him, TH...

Whether you like him or not, Chucky is a Horror Icon. First introduced in 1988’s “Childs Play”, Chucky took the idea of a killer doll and ran with it. Four sequels later Chucky has cemented his ground as one of horrors great franchise characters. Unfortunately like the films he stars in, Chucky’s representation in action figure form while fun havent always been very impressive. Mcfarlane Toys was the first to give it a good try with results that while at the time seemed cool, they were certainly not accurate though the Bride of Chucky version from that wave was the best to date. Medicom also released two life sized versions of Chucky and a Good Guy doll that were way overpriced and undersculpted. The mere fact that Chucky himself was only a toy baffled fans and collectors alike. The common thought? How difficult is it to get the likeness of a doll correct? Apparently it’s VERY difficult. Recently, Neca took TWO stabs at creating a classic pre-bride chucky with very mixed results. One in Cult Classics series 4 and its companion piece, a separate 12 “ figure with sound. While the Cult Classics figure was an upgrade on the Mcfarlane classic Chucky, complete with its replica Good Guy box (which was hailed by many as better than the figure), the 12 “ inch figure left a lot to be desired. At around the same time Sideshow released two 15 “ figures with realistic clothing.

The dolls were well received and very reasonably priced yet still inaccurate in some areas. At some point amidst these releases was one by a Japanese company called Dream Rush who did a Bride of Chucky set which included two 11 inch figures of Chucky and Tiffany with cloth clothing and movie accurate likenesses. To date they were the most accurate high end Chucky collectible available. So when it was announced that Dream Rush would produce a Classic Chucky and Good Guy doll set, Chucky fans everywhere rejoiced. I being a huge Chucky fan was excited to receive them and while this was supposed to be a joint review, I did not receive my Good guy version in time. So the main question is “Is this Chucky the definitive classic Chucky figure as the previous figure in the line was the definitive Bride of Chucky version?” Well, lets see shall we?

Packaging - ****
This is one of those instances where packaging can be considered an accessory as well. Chucky comes packaged in what is easily the most faithful rendition of the famous Good Guy doll box to date. The size is and shape is exactly is it appears in the film, especially when in comparison to Chucky. The box has a paper slipcover that matches up with the graphics around the lower half with the Childs Play 2 logo on it, its easily removable yet snuggly wrapped around it for those Mint in package collectors. Within the box Chucky is securely attached to a hefty cardboard insert via 5 twisty ties that thankfully are not taped to the cardboard as well. These twisty ties are very easy to remove and do not even require being cut as many others generally do. Chucky's head is wrapped in a clear soft plastic band that I would assume is to keep the hair in place and keep the face from rubbing against the boxes plastic window. Chucky's two weapon accessories are individually wrapped in sealed plastic wrapping and are attached to the inner cardboard by a sticky adhesive which is easily removable and does not leave any marks within the packaging. Overall the packaging job by Dream Rush is superb.

Sculpting - ****
To date, sculpting the perfect Chucky likeness has been accomplished only by Dream Rush, on their previous Chucky figure. Sideshow came very close however there version seems closer to Chucky from the original Childs Play film. Which yes, believe it or not differs in appearance from the Childs Play 2 version. Chucky's likeness here is pretty much spot on, yet at first glance it may not seem it. The Sculpt can be thrown off by the fact that the hair needs time to settle after being so tightly packed close to the head and is very flat upon initial removal from its packaging. Shaking the figure a few times and messing with the hair a bit will give it a fuller look more akin to its appearance in the films. The only parts of the sculpt that are obviously visible are the head and hands, but the body is in good proportion with the head and hands and is accurate to the anatomy found in the movies. Also getting points for the sculpt is the fact as detailed as the head and hand sculpt are it is never exaggerated to the point where the features look more human. The hands look like doll hands, the face has full blown cherub features as it should and the realistic plastic doll eyes are a very nice touch. Not part of the actual sculpt is the hair which has been an issue with most Chucky figures. Sideshow did a wonderful job with their classic Chucky's hair and Neca’s 12 “ hair was an abomination. The hair on this one is thick, coarse and cut in the correct style. It does require a bit of messing with to get it looking to your liking as stated before but overall it is done very well with only the left side being a tad longer than it should be. If there were any fault to this sculpt it would have to be that the face is slightly wider than it should appear. However this by all accounts would be considered nit-picking even by a hardcore Chucky fan such as myself. Overall this is probably the best classic Chucky sculpt ever.

Paint - ****
Paint on this figure is rather simple as it should be. The only real detailed portion coming on the face. Chucky has painted eyebrows, eyelashes and freckles which aren’t as dark as initial photos made them seem. His cheeks even appear to have a very faint airbrush job for slightly rosy cheeks. The lips and gums are also a faint pink, which blends smoothly with the rest of the face. The only other noticeable paint app is on the sneakers which is clean and precise. A nice touch is the added “dirt” to the bottom of the sneakers sole which is something that is purposefully absent from the Good Guy version of this figure.

Articulation - ***
Chucky has 13 points of articulation, which allows for a variety of movement especially in the arms. The neck is a typical swivel joint and a ball joint neck would have been a nicer inclusion. The remaining points of articulation are at the ankles, hips, wrists, forearms, elbows and shoulders, which are also typical swivel joints. Chucky can sit naturally and be posed in a variety of stances using the combo of the elbow and forearm articulation. He is pretty good in this department but ball joint shoulders and neck joints would have made it four stars

Outfit - ****
Clad in his authentic Good Guy outfit, Chucky snuggly fits into his overalls and long sleeved T-shirt with just enough sag to it to look natural, which is always a challenge in this scale. The overalls are a slightly different color denim from the previous Bride figure. Thankfully the shirt keeps the correct colors of those seen in the film. The biggest gripe I had with sideshows otherwise great figure was the made up color scheme for the shirt. Chucky is also given real socks to wear along with his standard issue Good Guy sneakers, which thankfully this time correct the issue of having the shoe laces say Good Guys on them, something that was noticeably absent from the Bride figure prior. Overall the clothes look and fit exactly as they should and are well crafted to boot.

Accessories - ****
Along with the Good Guy box, Chucky comes with two movie specific props, one being the knife he brandishes in the later half of the movie and two being a fan favorite prop the yard stick he beats Andys not so nice teacher Ms. Kettlewell to death with. Both are exactly replicated as seen in the film and sport immaculate paint jobs, they are a snug fit in Chuckys hand. Adding the aforementioned box and you have three very accurate props which enhance the appearance an already great figure.

Fun Factor - **
Coming at a high price point this probably isn’t the Chucky figure to choose if you want to be playing around with it a lot. In my opinion this would definitely be better suited as a display piece, however its sturdy nature makes it safe for kids to play with as well…IF you want your kids playing with a doll who murders people while using foul language, and really, who doesn’t? The only true qualm I had with this figure is that it is an inch taller than the Bride of Chucky figures dream rush had already released which in my opinion ruined what would have been a nice full Chucky collection to display along with the good guy doll. So for that I certainly dock stars as there was no reason to do so and this was a bit of a bummer and killed a bit of the fun.

Value - ***1/2
When compared to other Chucky figures on the market the value is plain as day, you get what you are paying for. The lower end Chucky collectibles definitely do not have the craftsmanship of this piece. The middle ground figures being the quality ones from Sideshow are definitely a better value but do not have the likeness accuracy nor the high attention to detail featured here. The going rate for these is generally $90-100, however Dream Rush previous issued set have fetched a higher price on ebay.

If you are a die hard Chucky fan then the purchase is a no brainer, if you are a high end horror collector this figure would also be a safe bet as it is the best Chucky figure ever produced. In comparison to other 12 “ figures the price is very reasonable even while lacking the articulation that figures from Takara and Medicom come with. It’s a safe bet this will not be the final Chucky collectible released, however its also a safe bet that if its not the best its pretty close to what the best will look like when it is released.

Overall - ****
The bottom line on this piece is that it IS the definitive classic Chucky figure on the market. Its price is higher than others, but when you to take into account the high quality as well as the fact that with all the misses by other companies attempts in producing the perfect Chucky collectible the price becomes slightly less an issue. When you have a 12inch figure that has top notch packaging, sculpting, Paint apps, movie accurate accessories as well as a cloth outfit that fits like a glove coupled with moderate articulation , its easy to see this figure is definitely worth the price (especially being an import piece) and will finally satisfy even the most fickle Childs Play fan. If you were even remotely considering purchasing it you will not be disappointed. If you are a high end collector of horror merchandise this is the Chucky to add to your collection.
