The Dark Knight Joker - DX11
Hot Toys

"The following is a guest review.  The review and photos do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Michael Crawford or Michael's Review of the Week, and are the opinion and work of the guest author."
The reason I came to the 1/6 world was due to an exceptionally lifelike collectible and a furthermore amazing review that I read that changed my life and made me a 1/6 maniac I am today.. It was the Hot Toys DX-01 Joker and the Michael Crawford review. Today I am reviewing the reincarnation of the same collectible on the same website that got me crazy . Crazy circle of life if I must say. Heartiest thanks to Michael as always.

The first Joker DX was the final hit from Hot Toys that nailed them to the top spot that they have been for a couple of years now. The first deluxe was not just a collectible but a new definition to what can be the future of premier collectibles. Hot Toys showed us all a revolution in skin texturing, multi layered hair sculpt, top of the line accessories and clothing, and the list never ended. It’s hard to forget the shivers in my hand and the raised heartbeat when I first saw the DX-01 sculpts, especially the police face. Masterfully creepy.

I am here today to check out if the 2.0 version of the legendary collectible did justice to the high anticipation.

Packaging - ****
This one’s heavy yet collector friendly. I like the choice of the picture outside depicting the main Joker card from the movie posters. All purple, not much prints but not a single expression of the character missed. The box is very similar to the other deluxe boxes with foam etc. making it collector friendly and very safe for the item inside. Considering that it comes with a big table and a chair and a room full of accessories, it’s designed pretty well to accommodate everything. Worth mentioning that you get a 1/1 replica with the box, yes, a Joker card with a safety pin as well. Cool, very cool.

Sculpting - ****
Before even looking at any further sculpts, I can assure you, YOU CAN’T BEAT THE DX-01 SCULPTS. It was made by the Sculpting Goddess herself. But hey, even if you can’t beat the old sculpt, you can sure match it, and this is the case with the new Joker 2.0. The new sculpts are amazing, closest to the actor as they were before, just different expressions. What I realised later is that these sculpts were also made by the sculpting Goddess, our very own “Yulliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii” (Yulli). This sculpt is spot on with the actor and the character played. The main sculpt of the dx-01 had a more of pouted expression, like he is thinking of something, but the Joker 2.0 has an expression showing that he has thought already, but didn’t like it. Not a very good moment to be in, if you ask me. The second sculpt has the insane laugh that makes the Joker invincible and keeps reminding you of the lines he said “You have nothing to scare me with all your strength”, creepy. The details on the second head are captured to the smallest of things that are visible, for example the teeth and the tongue, and still doesn’t miss out on the overall likeness of Heath Ledger.

Paint - ***1/2
Hot Toys keeps us showing how much they have advanced on the paint applications on every new product they launch. The paint application here is marvellous again. The heads are painted to seem lifelike as always but one of the things which standout here is the un-gloved hands. Hot Toys have made sure to keep in mind the character while painting the hands as well. The hands have red marks on the knuckles, dirty nails and very dirty palms. The details on the accessories are also great as they didn’t miss the scratches on the furniture and weapons etc. The PERS also has a more pinkish shade making the Joker look more lifelike and scary. I just saw the movie to compare Jokers makeup as I thought that the DX is a bit sweaty, especially the eyes of the laughing one, and yes it is. But that’s just a minor problem for me so no point deductions.

Articulation - ****
Hot Toys has used an advanced true-type here. I have not taken off the clothes completely to check this, but the shoulder and the arms evidently show this. The articulation is great and I specially like the elbows as their movement range is even better than the original true-type. The PERS is smoother as well showing that Hot Toys is advancing in everything they put in their collectibles.

Outfit - ***1/2
“The suit isn’t cheap”

You get a Kato suit with this one. For those who are not aware, Kato is one of the greatest tailors in 1/6 universe and hence have been employed freelance by Hot Toys for their Joker project. The materials used, the tailoring, the buttons, the way they fit the true-type, it’s all top notch and worth admiring. The chain on Joker’s waist is golden this time instead of the last silver one. The shoes are made of suede like material over the main plastic sculpt and comes with real tied laces, may God save them from untying.  I only have one complain here. As much as this suit looks immensely expensive and true to the real thing, it doesn’t complement the fact that it’s worn by the Joker. Unlike the painted face and hands, the suit is crisp and shining with no wear n tear or dirt whatsoever. For me it totally takes you away from the character, and hence the half a star deduction.

Acessories - ****+
So we are talking about a room of accessories here, no, I seriously mean it.  Let’s start off with the Glock 17 which comes fitted with a chrome slide and an extended magazine. He also comes with a Smith & Wesson M76, the machine gun with which he is mostly seen on the posters. To complete the gun lot, he also has the Remington shotgun that he was using during the Bruce Wayne party crashing scene. Now comes the Jokers personal choice for weapons and yes ladies and gentleman I am mentioning the knives. It is crucial for this character that the knives are of the utmost quality in details and the types. Joker has a butterfly knife, which completely works like a real one, an extendable knife reused from dx01 and a peeler. The paint application and the details are amazing in these. Joker also comes with the joker cards, US Dollars, handcuffs and a pencil… Ta Da … yes the pencil. This is very tiny and yet looks completely real and can also fit in a hole in the table given. I also got the Grumpy mask and the detonator as mine was the Sideshow exclusive, but I was lucky enough to get the last one from sideshow as it went on waitlist thereafter.

If this was not enough to fulfil your thirst for accessories, here comes the deluxe treatment. Joker also comes with a movie accurate enquiry room table, a chair and the room itself. Yes, Joker comes with a three wall backdrop of the enquiry room to recreate the various memorable scenes from The Dark Knight. We also get a not so standard DX Light up stand with rust effect and Joker nameplate. Wow, now that’s a DX.

Fun Factor - ****
With the amount of things he comes with, you can’t stop posing and reposing him. Absolute fun. In case you have the DX-12 Batman as well, my friends, sky is the limit.

Value - ***
For me shipment is a killer. The guy was $275 on sideshow but may cost anything and everything on ebay. The collectibles are getting expensive each day but let me tell you, this guy comes with things you can’t finishing counting. He also comes with a Kato suit and I have seen the original Kato Joker suit selling for $1000 as well. You also get the best character portrait in the market right now. Quality doesn’t come cheap, but you would not be disappointed with this one.

Things to Watch Out For -
The box with the knives and whatever is in that box is very tiny and delicate, make sure not to lose them as they are very important. Rest is all good.

Overall - ****+
You get a whole movie scene with the character, the room and all the related accessories and all of it looks creepy real. So what’s not to love. If you want to experience the best in Hot Toys, just buy it and enjoy telling the stories of how you felt when you unboxed it.
