"The following is a guest review.  The review and photos do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Michael Crawford or Michael's Review of the Week, and are the opinion and work of the guest author."

Enterbay has just released their latest update to the underlying sixth scale body, and Jeff Parker is here tonight to check it out - take it away, Jeff!

If you already have any of the Enterbay, Bruce Lee figures you will know just how good the base body looks, but for all that purdiness, it lacked articulation in a few key points, most notably, to me at least its ankles.

So, this is a comparatively brief review to hi-light the recent modifications that Enterbay have made to their base Bruce Lee (BL) body. It’s a relatively slight change, but one that makes the world of difference to posing it in those iconic Kung Fu high kicks!

Packaging - ***
This is a nice enough box, but like most base figure boxes it isn’t designed to bowl you over with its clever design and inventiveness! No, this is just designed to get the contents to you safely, and considering mine had quite a tough journey from the look of its dinged-up box, it does that job just fine, as the contents were in A1 perfecto condition.

Its outer design is virtually identical to the 2.5 I received when I got the Fist of Fury, so it’s a matt black background with a full colour picture of the body overlaid with its title ’ The Original Action Body, BL3.5’ which is spot laminated and embossed. Inside the box the figure is held secure sandwiched between two vac formed trays alongside his spare hands, no twisties are used at all.

Sculpting - ****
Most base bodies aren’t too concerned with their overall aesthetic. Sure, they want to look as good as they can, with a good skin tone and joints that don’t scream at you, but ultimately you are just gonna stick a head of your choice on it, then cover it in whatever outfit you see fit.
Well that may be the case with everything from the sad old Sideshow Buck right through to the Hot Toys, True-Type but the Enterbay BL series has a different agenda. These are specifically sculpted by Arnie Kim to represent the lean, über fit physique of Mr Bruce Lee, and are for swapping out with the ever growing army of figures that Enterbay have released of him thus far.

Now all the figures come with at least one body, but with figures like the Fist of Fury you had two head sculpts and two complete outfits, so it doesn’t take a genius to realise that by picking up a base bod you then have two complete figures. And because of the complete body sculpt by Arnie, it looks virtually as good with his shirt off as it does on!

Paint - ****
To be fair there is very little paint applied, all you’ll find are a couple of flashes of paint on his nipples. Apart from that, the whole body is cast in a good dense vinyl that has a very convincing flesh colour, so no paint is really that necessary, but considering most base figures have no paint at all…those painted nipples just have to bag a full score… indulge me.

Articulation  - ***3/4
Enterbay claim this figure has 15 points of articulation, but that is doing it a great disservice, as I count at least 28, I suppose it’s all about what you consider a point of articulation. My breakdown would go like this (see the attached pic for a indication of the articulation positions). Firstly we have the neck, it’s a post that the various Enterbay heads can simply push on to. Up until now a lot of Enterbay figures have suffered from wobbly head syndrome, luckily this one seems to have rectified this problem and is much firmer. Next we have the shoulders, these can spin a full 180 degrees and turn out from the body a full 90 degrees, the elbows can bend up to about 55 degrees and can also turn a full 180 degrees. The lower arms are of a unique configuration used by Enterbay, and are basically a plug in design just above the wrist, meaning you can swap out the hand positions easily and they can also turn freely. The waist can turn and rock back and forth by about 30 degrees, the hips are a nice design that hasn’t changed since their first figures, however, although the design hasn’t changed, the ability to use the full articulation is now much easier as those early figures were so stiff that many (myself included) feared trying to use some of the joints for fear of breakage. Now Enterbay seem to have ironed out those early problems and the hips move much more freely without being loose or floppy in the least. The basic construction of the hip is this, a post comes out from the groin horizontally at 90 degrees this has the ability to turn freely, it in turn goes into a ball joint that can rotate and turn out from the body. This ball joint is fixed to the top of the thigh with a peg that also has the ability to rotate.

Next down are the knees, these are of the classic double jointed design, and can double back on themselves a full 180 degrees on ratcheted joints.

And now finally the ankles! They can bend down to a full ballet pointe and up to about 45 degrees, they can also rock from side to side… and the new feature…. ta, ta, daaaa, cue full fanfare…is that they can now turn as well… now this might not sound like that big a deal… and to be fair it isn’t, but it improves the ability to pose him in natural standing positions and in extreme high kicking positions hugely.

I have already reviewed the Bruce Lee as Kato figure, he also came on the BL 3.5, and having seen what a difference the body made to the way it stood and posed, I just new I had to get one for my Fist of Fury set.

The basic difference between the BL 2 and BL 2.5 compared to the BL 3 and BL 3.5 is the position of the neck, the 2 series is craned forward in a fighting stance where as the 3 series is in a more natural straight up standing pose, are you with me so far… come on keep up!
The 2.5 differed from the 2 because it had the new magnetic neck and the 3.5 differs from the 3 because it has the new ankle articulation, so now I guess we need a BL 2.75 so it too can benefit from the new improved ankles… or will they jump to the BL 4… the mind boggles!

Accessories - ***
Bruce is obviously famous for throwing all kinds of Kung Fu shapes, so it’s fitting that he comes with some cool hand positions, we get two fists fitted to the figure plus three others in some of his trademark gestures, which is a nice selection for a base body!

The only thing you could consider to be omitted is a figure stand, but as I could get this to stay upright just fine without one, it’s a moot point anyway.

Outfit - N/A
It’s a base figure so no clothes are included, but you’ll find most 1/6th outfits fit it just fine.

Fun Factor -  ***
I was tempted to say this category is not applicable, as at the end of the day base figures don’t take on much personality till you stick a head on them and give them some groovy threads. However for any character that needs to be seen without his groovy threads, this is the one for you, so if you are fed up to the back teeth of looking at your Sideshow Slave Brent or Crazy Horse then this could totally turn around how you view them!

Value - ***1/4
The important thing to remember here is that this figure is made from vinyl, which is much denser, stronger and more expensive to manufacture than ABS plastic. It’s also just about the only base figure available at the moment that looks this good unclothed, so $30 seems like quite the deal to me. Especially when you consider I just checked eBay and saw people asking fro $88 for a Medi RAH base figure and $40 for a True Type.

Overall - ****
When you buy one of the BL base bodies you know… or at least you should by now, that you are buying it for its specific aesthetic. If you want the ultimate in extreme articulation then there are other bodies available. However, don’t let that put you off as you can still achieve some great deep stances and with the aid of a stand you’ll get some fantastic flying kick poses. So as long as you approach this knowing what to expect, there really is absolutely nothing to complain about. It’s a top class body!
