Packaging - ***
The boxes aren't particularly special, but they have decent graphics
and some background information. Inside, the foam trays keep everything
safe, but there's no Certificate of Authenticity. They do print the
edition number and size on the base of the statue, however.
Sculpting - ***1/2
Once again, Mr. Hughes comes up with a terrific 1950's style pin-up
pose that works great for this character.
She
has her mace resting on the floor, leaning into it with a slight curve
to her back and a sly look in her eye. Even Gentleman Ghost would be
smitten.
This is the second winged statue
in the series (with the
Armored Wonder Woman being the first), and the feathers here are more
realistic, less metallic. There's plenty of detail work in the wings,
as well as the smaller details of the arm wraps and helm.
These
statues are roughly an 8" scale, but of course Hawkgirl is a little
smaller than some of the other ladies, like Wonder Woman, which fits
with the comic books.
It's necessary to assembly this
statue, as
it comes in three pieces - the base, the mace, and the lady. Place the
metal post on the mace in the base first, and turn it so it leans in
the correct direction. Then slip the metal posts on both feet into the
base, lining up the hands with the handle on the mace. It works better
than it might sound, and the fit was smooth and clean.
Paint - ***
The paint work isn't quite as perfect this time around, which was a bit
of a disappointment.
The
face work is good, especially the eyes, hair and eyebrows. The lips are
a little weird - that 'v' on the top is a bit more retro than I like -
but at least the lines are clean and sharp.
The black liner on
the hawk eyes is a little sloppy, but the real problems lie in the
costume. The edges of the green are very haphazard, especially on the
chest. Even the boots have some sloppy cut lines, and the edges of the
flesh and costume run together on the arms.
I do like the wings though -
very realistic feathers, with a nice gray tone.
Value - **1/2
The price on these has slipped up a bit, closer to $80 - $85, but
considering the quality and the price point on similar statues right
now, I have to say they are still a solid value.
Things to Watch Out For -
Be sure to assemble the statue in the right order - mace first,
Hawkgirl second.
Overall - ***
I waffled around a bit on this one - I really wanted to give her
another half star. That's just my youthful crush talking though, and
with the weak paint work I just couldn't do it. The paint work was
disappointing, particularly since clean lines are so critical to her
costume.
The
sculpt is excellent though, and I love the design. I'm thrilled because
I finally have a Cover Girls statue of one of my very favorite DC
ladies, bringing the number of must haves to one less.
