Garo

Ardiatma Mardhika is back with another guest review from the Far East - tell us all about it, Ardiatma!

Hello again. This my second review. Thanks Michael for letting me wrote this. Let’s cut the introduction and move to the real thing.

The Figure is from Garo TV shows that aired in Japan. It’s from a series that called Equip and Prop. The main idea is by completing the series, you can make a lot of figure variations from the shows. The TV live action show itself is aim at older audiences. This can be seen by the dark tones and violence contents in the shows. The story involves Saejima Kouga, who happen to be a Makai Knight that protects human form darkness demons called Horrors. If I’m not mistaken, this figure is one of the forms that Saejima can changed.

Enough for the introductions… let’s meet the monster…

Packaging - **1/2
This mean monster come in huge box… the box measures about 40 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm. It’s a window boxed, so you can see what you pay for your hard earned money. The back side gives a explanations about the figures and photo of it. Sadly, it doesn’t give info about other item in it’s series. A kind of previous item from the series might be pretty useful, since some accessories needs figure from the previous ones.

Opening the box we will see why I gave it a gave it an average score. It’s a Twisties heaven. I count around 20 twisties! To make matter worse, not only it’s twist, it also tied like a lace. I lost my patience at the 10th twisties and decide to cut them all. The good thing is the box is efficient in storing it’s component. Two an a half star.

Sculpting - ****
This is where this figure shines. The picture doesn’t do the justice. You got to see it yourself to amaze at it’s detail. Every horn, claws, teeth is beautifully sculpt. Detail is also amazingly crafted. As for SIC and Movie Realization series, this has became Bandai’s Standard. Good Going, Bandai.

Paint - ***1/2
The Gold is perfectly Painted. The Shading is right at the money. No Visible (although minor ones still occurs) blop witnessed. I still wondering is it a mass production figures. One hell of a art form. See the picture if you doesn’t believe me. Simply amazing.

Articulation - **
If you thought the hands and leg joint to the body is moveable, your wrong. It’s fixed (although you can move it by release and put it back at the desire position). Beside those joints, it’s moveable. It has around 16 points of articulation. The head and claws has ball jointed neck, while others has usual cut joints. The problem is, due to the weight of the figure, it’s almost impossible to pose him. May be it’s need a different kind of articulation (maybe the ones like in Revoltech figures). This is the monster’s Achilles heel. I Guess Bandai intended to make it a display item, not to play with.

Accessories - **
It came with Head, mask, and variant tails. The head and mask itself needs figures from the previous figure to used. Too bad it doesn’t came with a stand that can fully support the figure. It needs one. I guess the selling point for this figure is the detail and size.

Fun Factor - *
Monster is always a good subject for kids. But with fragile joints and limited articulation, I wouldn’t gave it to any children. Simply there’s no fun in figure who had such a fragile joints.

Value - ****/**1/2
The selling price for this hulking figures is 6300 yen (About 60 $). With the size and detail, it’s pretty much average score. BUT, I bought this at Asobit City in Akihabara, Japan, where they put in on a sale price of 2900 yen (about 30$). Now, that’s what I called a steal deal.

Things to Watch Out For -
Window boxed means you can choose for the best paint ops (although the high quality of the paint make it little less difficult to do).

Overall - ****/ ***
If you bought it at the price as I do, it’s a fabulous buy. Even if you do it in normal price, it’s still a good bargain considering the quality of this figure. It makes me want to complete the set. Maybe when I’m rich enough. He he he.

As I mentioned before, I bought it at Asobit City at Akihabara Area, Japan when I’m there. But I think HLJ has them too. Also I’m sure import hobby shop had a few of them.
