Introduction

Things have been quiet these last three months, with shipping delays and manufacturing delays due to the pandemic. But it seems to be picking up again, and ThreeZero has just released the 12th figure in their terrific Game of Thrones series - Jon Snow!

But Michael, didn't they already do Jon Snow? Why, yes, yes they did!  He was very early on, and based on his look in the first season or so.  And oh, he had a few issues. It's no surprise that ThreeZero went back to the character and produced a second version, this time based more on his look at the end of the series.

This guy will run you around $180 - $190, depending on the retailer, and he just started shipping to the U.S.

Packaging - ***
The package matches the earlier release, with a nice slip cover over a standard box.  The cover has the embossed Stark signet as well. Inside, everything is safe and sound and relatively collector friendly, although they do use some of the annoying sticky plastic to hold the smaller accessories in place. It's not really necessary, as there are covers for each tray as well.

There's also a simple instruction sheet, but it's not particularly useful. In fact, I wasn't sure what a couple of the images were trying to convey.

Sculpting - ***1/2
While I wasn't thrilled with the original Jon sculpt, I wasn't as hard on it as some collectors. I do think it looks like him, and I also think it's superior to many of the boutique versions out there. But it wasn't up to the level of some of their other early figures, and was a disappointment when compared against the larger set.

This is definitely an improvement. I included a photo of the first version with this guy at the end of the review, but you can also hit up the old review here. It's not merely a sculpt thing either - a big part of the issue with the first release was the paint, and that has also improved.

This portrait is a nice example of how ThreeZero has upped their game in the last couple years. Along with Asmus and Qmx, they are doing work in this scale at a reasonable price and good quality. The detail work is much better now, including the finely stranded hair, subtle eyebrows, age appropriate realistic skin texture, and well done facial hair.

The likeness is not 100% however. I'd go 80% at this point, certainly recognizable but not quite the home run of some other releases.  The expression is life-like, with just enough hardened emotion and attitude to suit the character.

I have another photo down a bit further that shows off the man bun hair style as well. You can see a very faint seam where the front and back come together, but it's only noticeable in macro photos and in just the right lighting. In hand, it blends in very well.

Another big bonus on the sculpt - and figure overall - is the terrific gloves and boots. The first release had oversized versions, and it really hurt the look. Both the boots and gloves (hands) are properly scaled this time around. More on that in the Outfit section.

He stands about 11 3/4" tall, similar to the earlier release. He also has normal proportions - none of those gangly legs we occasionally see with ThreeZero figures.

Paint - ***1/2
While the sculpt has improved, I think it's the huge strides in the production paint work that is really setting this guy apart. The skin tone is much better, much more realistic, and the hint of the scar along the left side looks great. The hair line is subtle, with a soft transition between the skin and hair, and the beard has a slightly lighter coloration, very life-like and accurate.

The eyes need to have a little more depth in the sculpt, and a little more gloss with the paint. They are still a bit 'dead', and these two improvements would be a huge bonus.

Articulation - ***1/2
The underlying body is also working well, although there's one joint that gave me fits.

That joint is the single ball jointed neck. The head and neck are one piece, so any tilt and lean has to come from the low neck joint. The head tends to pop off easily, so getting much additional personality out of a slight cock of the head is near impossible.

The rest of the joints work great, although the heavy clothing does restrict the torso and waist. Of course, this shouldn't be a surprise, and it doesn't hamper him much more than it would in real life.  The shoulders, elbows, and wrists work great, and the arms can maintain poses.

The hips, knees, and ankles can take very natural stances, and deep poses are quite possible and realistic thanks to an excellent two piece boot design that gives the feet enough rocker movement to remain flat on the ground.

Accessories - ***
He doesn't have a ton of extras, but most of them are quite useful.

He has extra hands of course, and a couple extra wrist pegs just in case. There are three sets total - the relaxed set he comes wearing, closed fists, and gripping fists. These swap easily, and as I mentioned earlier, the hands are in scale.

This figure comes with leather braces on his arms, but if you'd like to remove them, they've included cuffs for the gloves to slip on the forearms.

There are two main weapons - his dagger and sword, Longclaw. Both have scabbards that slip into loops on his already attached belt. They look great, with nice sculpting and paint work. The hilt pops off the sword to make inserting it in the gripping hand easier.

Since this is a Season 8 version, he also has a Dragonglass blade, perfect for killing a White Walker. And in the "weird things he has that I'm not sure why" category, there's a second belt. He's not wearing it in any of the marketing photos, so I'm not sure if it's for a more relaxed look, without the outer robes, or what, but it's there.

Outfit - ****
The outfit has several layers, from pants to shirt to robes to outer cloak, and all of them are high quality stuff.

The cloth pieces are nicely tailored, with good stitching and high quality material. There's just the right amount of wear and tear, not over done, but enough to look lived in.

I mentioned the two piece boot sculpt, but it's worth mentioning again because it's such a huge improvement over the oversized clod hoppers the first version was wearing. Not only do these look better, but they function better as well.

The sculpted armor pieces look great as well, and there's real leather (at least it feels like it) braces on the arms. The belt and loops for the scabbards work great, and come already in place. If you've ever been frustrated trying to get one of these complex belts to look good, you'll appreciate this all the more.

The gloves are properly sized too, another big plus over the first release. Including the set of glove cuffs was a nice touch too.

But it's the outer cloak that really shines. The furry collar and front edge look great, and while it has enough weight to hang naturally on its own, there's also a wire on the front edge to help pose it. It straps across the front and buckles in back the same as the other cloaks in the series.

Fun Factor - ***1/2
This guy has a ton of posing potential, particularly when you add in characters like the Night King, Arya, or Dany. I'm hoping we see them revisit Dany as well and give us a season 8 version to go alongside this guy.

Value - ***1/2
While this isn't quite Hot Toys level, it's also no where near Hot Toys prices.  At just $180, you're getting quite a bit of bang for your buck, making it harder and harder to justify $230 or more for a standard release from some other companies.

Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing. I had no trouble working with the figure and accessories, and I was never concerned about damage or breakage.

Overall - ***1/2
While I didn't hate the first Jon Snow, he has some serious issues that relegated him to the back of the shelf. Those boots and gloves - he didn't deserve to be out front with the likes of Jaime or Brienne. But this release is a big improvement in almost every way, and well worth picking up. As I said, I just hope we see them add in a season 8 Dany to go with him.
