Introduction
Everyone loves Toy Story, especially the first film where our favorite characters come together and learn what it means to have and be friends. Quantum Mechanix has a deal with Disney, producing Q-Figs based on their various properties, including the beloved films about the exploits of Woody and Buzz. Tonight I'm checking out their latest release, with the duo soaring through the clouds, 'falling with style'.
This guy is going to start shipping any day, and will run you around $40 at the Disney online store, as well as various Disney locations. Yep, it's
a Disney exclusive.
Packaging - ***
The packaging has the same wrap around cover style that we've seen with other releases. There's some nice artwork, and it's sturdy and collector
friendly. No need for instructions. This is also part of the 'max' series, presumably because there are two characters, not just one.
Sculpting - ****
All the Q-Figs are super cute, it's in their DNA. Take two characters that were already cute, alter the designs just enough to fit in with the
series, and you have a hit.
Buzz is carrying Woody through the air, re-enacting their "falling with style" routine. They've used clouds under them as the support, and both are looking upward into the sky. The detail work is quite good, particularly for an animated set of characters. With animation, even the best Pixar animation, lots of texture and surface detail isn't common. But we get plenty here, with sharp edges and well defined micro effects.
Now, I'm sure that the less mature among my readers - you know who I'm talking about - are snickering about the pose. Yes, from most angles it does appear as though Woody and Buzz have taken their relationship to the next level, but you're merely layering adult interpretations over a moment of wonder.
I'm not sure what other Disney releases we will see, but I hope they flesh out the animated properties quite liberally in this style.
Paint - ****
Quantum Mechanix has made a lot of strides in their production paint work, and this new material they are using (and have patented) certainly allows
for a great looking final product. Most of the details are extremely clean, and the key areas are sharp and consistent.
Small details, like the dark thread on Woody's vest or the emblems on Buzz, are extremely well done. The subtle shading on the clouds looks great, and the brighter colors really pop. There's a few edges that could be better - the red stripes on Buzz's wings are slightly off - but overall it's an excellent paint application at this price point.
Value - **
Most regular Q-Figs are around $20. When they get more complex, you see $30. At $40, this pair is pushing it. I'd be happier in that $30
range, where this would get an average score of **1/2, but the price point isn't a deal breaker.
Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing. Nothing is fragile, and nothing is worrying.
Overall - ****
While I'm a little worried about the price - I hope this isn't an indication that non-exclusive figures will rise too - I have to admit this is one
of the nicest I've seen so far. I am looking forward to adding additional Disney characters to the shelf, and the broad range of licenses they
are doing in this style just makes them all the more attractive.
