Introduction

I'm a big fan of the Captain Marvel movie, as well as her other appearances in the MCU.  Sadly, I haven't yet gotten any of my sixth scale figures from Hot Toys, although one of them is finally on its way. Hopefully you'll see a review soon, maybe as early as Sunday.

But Hot Toys aren't the only ones doing high quality Captain Marvel figures, and sixth scale isn't the only scale I love. Mezco has just shipped their own version in the One:12 Collective, another addition to their terrific MCU line up.

She'll run you around $80, depending on the retailer of course, and just started shipping in the U.S. over the last couple weeks.

Nothing super unique here. The slip cover box, with plastic trays inside, is the usual understated design. It's all collector friendly, and the figure and accessories are quite safe inside. There's not a ton of graphics, but that's the norm with the standard One:12 packages.

Sculpting - ***1/2
You probably assume there's more than one portrait - you'd be right. As usual, Mezco has included extra looks. There's three this time, and all of them are terrific.

She comes wearing the unmasked portrait with long, flowing hair. The soft, subtle detail on the face is beautiful, and I think it's an extremely accurate sculpt considering the scale. Remember, she's only about 6" tall.

However, I'm not loving the hair sculpt here. The strands are thicker than usual, and there is less texture detail than we've seen from them with other figures. The promo photos looked good, but in hand the hair is a bit of a let down.

The other two portraits are masked. One has the normal hair mohawk, while the other has a translucent orange/red mohawk. The expression is also slightly different. The normal version has a wisp of a smile, while the flaming hot variation is madder, more determined.  I'm pretty surprised they changed the expression, since they could have merely gone with a different plastic for the hair and called it a day.

The various hands are sculpted to work with the other accessories, and they give you some decent posing variety.  As I mentioned, she's about 6" tall, although that's without the mohawk.

Paint - ****
Mezco has really upped the ante on the production paint work in this scale. All three portraits, as well as the bits and bobs on the costume, are extremely clean and sharp.

The unmasked face has a natural skin tone, with just enough translucence to give it depth and realism. The hair is still not great - I don't love the wash - but it looks much better on the masked head. Of course, my favorite coloration is the translucent pieces, which catch and reflect light in all sorts of cool ways.

The small details on the mask and costume are great too. The white eyes are super clean, and the edge along the face and mask is well defined.  The colors are bright, and the overall effect is eye catching and impressive.

One of the heads is supposed to have glow in the dark eyes. I couldn't get much out of it, but I hadn't had a lot of time to leave it in direct light before testing it out. Your mileage will probably vary.

Articulation - ***1/2
The underlying body works great, although I would have liked a little more rocker movement out of the ankles.

The ball neck worked well, and the heads swapped easily. You can get plenty of tilt and lean in both the neck and torso, thanks to the chest and waist joints. This allows you to break up any unnatural straight lines through the torso and head.

The shoulders, elbows, and wrists aren't any more restricted by the costume than they would be in real life. She can take good energy blasting or throwing stances, and the joints are stiff enough to maintain them.

The hips, knees, and ankles can manage short to deep stances, although I couldn't get quite as much rocker out of the two piece sculpted boots as I'd like for the deepest stances. Still, she can manage natural, flowing poses quite easily, and you should have no trouble finding a great look.

Accessories - ****
As with most of these figures, she starts out with those multiple heads. It's a big plus to this category, although I already covered the sculpt and paint aspects in the previous sections.

There's also a variety of hands to go with the fists she comes wearing. There are three additional sets, and they swap cleanly.

Technically, there's two more sets. The round photon balls and the long photon missiles are actually hands, that pop onto the wrist post itself. That's a smart move, rather than trying to have these heavier pieces fit around a separate hand sculpt. It looks like there are two clear hands inside too, and there is a distinct left and right.

There are two softer, smaller energy effects that can fit around the hands, however. These work well with certain poses.

She also comes with her cat, Goose.  It's a great sculpt, more realistic than we usually see, but there is something weird about the eyes...

She also has a couple accessories not originally mentioned with the figure. First, there's the itty-bitty pager. It's very well sculpted, especially for the tiny scale.

Second, there's a Tesseract cube. It has a shimmering look, which makes it better than just a square hunk of plastic.

Finally, there's the standard display base that works with either the single foot peg, or the larger translucent support rod. The latter is great for flying and jumping poses.

She also has a bomber jacket, but I'm including that in the Outfit section coming up next.

Outfit - ***1/2
The tight suit looks great, with sculpted bits added at various spots. These are attached tightly, and the layering of the detailed pieces on the suit itself is pretty amazing. This type of work is getting more and more impressive with every release.

I mentioned that the two piece boots are a little more restrictive than I like, but the sculpt is excellent. The tailoring of the cloth costume is also quite good, although there's just a bit of crotch sag this time around.  We haven't seen that much since their early figures, and it's not as bad here, but there is a bit of it in deeper poses.

She also has her bomber jacket, and it's very impressive. The tailoring and fit are excellent - the sleeves are actually the right length!  The flag on the sleeve looks good, and the graphic on the back is fantastic, worn and yet easy to make out. There's a zipper in front, but I didn't try getting it to work, since the open look is what I'll be going for.

Fun Factor - ***1/2
Combine her with the other MCU figures, and you should be able to set up a pretty good display. She's got plenty of extras to create re-posing opportunities too, making her more fun than average.

Value - **1/2
At $80, she's the average One:12 price. She comes with plenty of accessories, along with the very well done bomber jacket, making the price point acceptable.

Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing! That pager is mighty easy to lose, but other than that you should be good to go.

Overall - ***1/2
We don't get enough live action MCU figures in the One:12 line, but when we do, they tend to be some of the nicest.  I really like this rendition of Captain Marvel, although there were a couple minor nits.  The sculpted hair was a little clunky this time, and poor Goose got some googly eyes. But the outfit is nice, and the accessories are excellent, and having three portraits to work with goes a long way to getting past the minor issues.
