Introduction
I meant to post this review a couple weeks ago, just before Halloween. That's when the movie Hocus Pocus was getting near 24/7 replay on cable, and it was on everyone's mind. Ah, but it slipped mine, and I'm finally getting back around to it.
Quantum Mechanix has this very cool line of statues called Q-Figs. Most are small, in the 3 - 5" size, like this set of the witches from the aforementioned film. Others are pretty big, and there's a very cool IT one at your local Wal-mart right now.
This one is a Disney exclusive - yep, this is one of their movies - and will run you around $50.
Packaging - ***1/2
Qmx has a pretty cool way of boxing these. It looks like a simple solid box, but it actually opens up on one side and peels back entirely to let you
get to the plastic tray inside. It's all collector friendly of course, and the graphics are quite nice.
Sculpting - ***1/2
This statue shows off the three Sanderson sisters, all riding a broom together. Up front is Sarah Sanderson (Sarah Jessica Parker), in the middle is
Winnie Sanderson (Bette Midler), and in back is Mary Sanderson (Kathy Najimy). All are laughing with glee, done up in the cartoonish style of the
Q-Fig. Because these are a lot like animated versions of the characters - and young ones at that (think Tiny Toons) - there's not a ton of surface
detail. But that clean, smooth look is actually quite attractive, and there's plenty of sculpt detail in things like their jewelry and clothes.
I love the pose, and it's obvious to anyone born in the last 20 years who these three are. They've captured their essence while remaining true to the overall style of the series.
Paint - ***
Q-Figs are made with a proprietary poly-resin, and paint likes it very much. Generally, the paint work on these is exceptional, and the absorption
and consistency is excellent.
This time, there's a few blips however. The faces are all great, as is the hair. But the costumes have some slightly sloppy edges, a bit out of the norm for this series. It's not awful, and you'll have to look close to notice, but it's a bit below the high standard they've set.
Value - **1/2
At $50, these are on the high side, but compared with other Disney exclusive statues and figures, they aren't that far off. I'm going with an
average value here, since you're getting all three sisters in one shot.
Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing.
Overall - ***1/2
Let's be honest - these are the ultimate Nerd Hummels. I used to use that term for any non-articulated figure...but these go beyond that, they even
look like Hummels! And guess what? I really like them. The designs are great, the prices are decent, and the subjects are terrific.
So add the Sanderson sisters to your Halloween display for next year!
