Introduction
Quantum Mechanix has been producing a variety of Disney themed collectibles in their adorable Q-Fig series. You may have remembered my review of Woody and Buzz, or perhaps Hocus Pocus (yes, that's a Disney property too!). But nothing says Disney quite like Fantasia. They've just released one of the larger Q-Figs (called Q-Fig Max) based on the movie, with Mickey and the dancing brooms.
This one will run you a bit more, since it's a larger diorama. While Mickey is pretty much in line with other actual figures in the regular Q-Fig style, the overall base is about 6 1/2" in diameter, and it stands about 7" tall.
It retails for around $50, and while you can pick it up through Disney online or one of their retail stores, you can also get it at a number of
other retailers online.
Packaging - ***
I like the collector friendly wrap around boxes, but this one was a little thin for the larger scale. I had some warpage and glue loosening on one
side, a minor nit for me, but for someone looking to keep a pristine box, it would be an issue.
Sculpting - ****
As I mentioned earlier, this is a Q-Fig Max, with a larger base and more complex setting. Mickey is swirling on the book in a water vortex, while
the brooms dance and throw buckets of water above.
The detail work is appropriate for the source material, and Mickey looks terrific. The design is chaotic and dynamic, and the splashing water looks particularly good. The water below Mickey isn't merely a wave or a lake, it's the vortex, the whirlpool, and he's riding the edge. It's a fantastic design, and they really nailed it.
I have one nit, but it's a minor one. I don't love the mold line along Mickey's face, half way between his nose and mouth. It's in a really obvious spot, although in hand it's much harder to see.
Paint - ***1/2
The beautiful blue and white paint work on the translucent, splashing water really sells the overall look of the statue.
There are some blips and blops however, particularly around the white areas on Mickey, like the gloves, or the black edges of his face. We've seen how amazing a paint application can be applied to the special material Qmx is using, and this time there's a few more issues than usual. Still, in hand it's a mighty impressive little statue.
Value - **1/2
At $50, you're getting a decent sized diorama, similar in heft to something like a Batman Black and White release. There's a lot of work in the
sculpt, multiple sections that were assembled, and the overall result is really nice. I'm going with an average value, but I suspect some folks will
feel it deserves another half star here, particularly considering how expensive most Disney specific items are.
Things to Watch Out For -
Not a thing. This material is much less likely to break than a more traditional polystone or polyresin, and there's nothing to assemble or lose.
Overall - ***1/2
These Q-Figs are truly Nerd Hummels. They are small statues, made from high quality materials with high quality paint operations, and come in at a
fairly reasonable price considering the current market. Their expansion into a wider and wider variety of Disney properties also makes them highly
collectible.
For the Fantasia fans, this is a particularly nice release. You don't need to be a regular Q-Fig collector to appreciate this one, and it will look fantastic on the shelf all by itself.
